The first G-Shock was introduced in 1983, when, according to Casio, designer Kikuo Ibe was inspired to create an unbreakable watch after breaking a pocket watch given to him by his father. Whether or not this exact bit of self-mythologizing is true, the story illustrates that function was the driver of the design of the Casio G-Shock. They’re all beefy and bulky, with rolls of rubber and bits of plastic jutting out in different g shock protection directions, and G-Shocks are so-named for their shock and impact resistance. Casio is a Japanese watch brand part of Casio Computer Co., LTD. The limited edition timepiece comes prepared with the US flag, NASA logos and an engraved space shuttle icon on the back. I think the GW7900B-1 is one of the best looking G-Shocks, but I recently bought a DW-5600BB-1 that has a reverse LCD display like the GW7900B-1 and I find it very difficult to read in low light. A lot of people have the same complaint about the reverse LCD displays on G-Shocks. There is also the GW ER which has a standard LCD display but for some reason it never got a U.S. release so it is more expensive to obtain. I think the Tough Solar and Multi-Band timekeeping features will always be useful.
The GST-B300 series is also available with a resin bezel and soft urethane bands. There are many other deserving models that had to be excluded from our Top 20 list below. The cheapest ones are okay but they don’t have all the features like world time, multiple alarms, and auto light. No, the GWG-1000 does not have a carbon fiber insert band. It really depends which features you want and which look you prefer, keep in mind the GPW-1000 is fully analog. Which watch would you consuder for world travel- Deserts, jungle treking, rafting etc.
The watch, unlike the ones before it, supports Bluetooth connectivity and a pedometer. For other basic G-Shock functions, the notable ones are the timer and stopwatch functions which have been tweaked to fit the tastes of fitness enthusiasts. It’s more or less meant for large people, who want extra durability for their watches in the case of extra shocks and vibrations. Casio does this well enough to an extent that the GX-56BB is regarded as one of the toughest watches in the G-Shock collection. I have bought and sold G shock over the years and I currently own 5 models, four are analogue/digital and one is digital GW 9400). My common disappointment with all of them is the poor digital displays in both bright and dark lighting conditions.
All in all, the Bluetooth functions seemed well thought out and completely unobtrusive. Unlike the more elaborate wristtop computers we’ve been seeing lately, the GB–6900 is a humble G-Shock that just happens to be connected to your phone, and it doesn’t try to be anything more. The G-Shock watch is designed to have a battery life of 10 years.
They prevent damage by easing shocks to the buttons, which are connected directly with the module, as well to the glass surface and case back. Smartwatches are nice but they suffer baby g shock from short battery life and are too delicate for extreme environments. However, if all you want is a tough, traditional style sports watch than G-Shocks are a good option.
The various watches in the series boast a few different features, let’s take a quick look at a couple of them. After 1997, however, the trend faded and Casio, left with overstock, had to come up with a different strategy. Using the profits from that success, Mr. Kashio and his three brothers developed their own calculator, a desk-sized g shock watch device at the time. Over the years, the company became Casio Computer Company Ltd. , and the products offerings expanded to musical keyboards and, eventually, digital watches — with the introduction of the G-Shock. All of the above watches come with Casio’s “Tough Solar” charging system to keep your battery going for a long, long time.
How often you use the sensors and certain features will also affect the battery life. Features that move the hands such as the compass and hand shift feature may also use up more battery than the GW-9400 would. A fully digital G-Shock like the G5600E-1 should be able to keep charged sufficiently under office lights and a bit of outdoor light. If the watch isn’t fully charged when you receive it, it may need more direct sunlight to get a full charge.
Most of the Tough Solar models around $100 or less are the smaller models. Other large and affordable solar models are the GW7900B-1 and GR8900A-1 but I would suggest going with a positive LCD display like the G as it is easier to read. Still pondering on whether I get it, or get my other preference, a GW7900B-1 which is not a bad package for the price! The new Frogman is probably worth the price considering its features although for a non-analog G with the only differences being the materials, depth sensor, compass and thermo it is hard to justify.
