This is so you can read the digital screen even if the time is such that the analog hands block it. Not a small watch by any means, but it’s also significantly smaller than many popular G-Shocks, which measure closer to 50mm and have unusual geometry that can make them a tough wear.
In daylight the dial reflects light from different facets of the multilayer structure, while at night things get a little harder to read.
