Generally, AMD Ryzen 5 microprocessors contain either 4 cores that can process 8 threads at once or 6 cores that can support 12 threads at once. You probably won’t need a Threadripper CPU, but it’ll be awesome to have one. It’s for advanced users only who need to push their systems beyond their limits. The Ryzen 9 family is AMD’s latest batch of computing magic, packing in up to 12 cores and 24 threads and are a great middle-ground between the Ryzen 7 and Threadripper.

Ryzen Mobile instantly makes AMD a serious player in the mainstream laptop space. In most use cases, a Ryzen Mobile chip is either a little faster or within striking range of the Intel 8th Gen Core. In fact, the only test that was a strong win for Intel was Geekbench 4; a few gtx 1090 milliseconds of time in app-opens and 6 minutes of battery life are well within the margin of error. AMD’s processor also offers significantly better integrated graphics, even though the graphics performance is not strong enough to turn a regular ultrabook into a gaming rig.

What’s most interesting about these and the other Ryzen processors is they are all unlocked, allowing users to overclock them to squeeze out every last bit of performance. While the performance exhibited by Intel’s 6-core Tiger Lake architecture processor is curious by many users, it is built on 7nm Zen 3 architecture in a short time CPU-Z test. The X470 platform also gives us room to tinker with overclocking. Results in games were a little behind the Ryzen X, by a “little” I’m talking around five percent behind. Around five percent in FPS won’t destroy immersion but does show just how close processors are.

I bought this CPU wondering if it was going to be an upgrade over my Intel I5 6600K. I can honestly say it is. In a number of newer game titles my old processor was running at 100% cpu usage and causing stuttering in those games. Overclocking the processor did help in those titles however it was still not enough.

The Ryzen 5 chips make digital audio workstation performance more accesible than similarly-priced Intel parts, and that’s a major win for AMD. However, the Core i7-6800K’s total dominance of these tests suggests the Ryzen parts could do with more memory bandwidth to play with. At the punishing buffer size of 64, the older and lower-clocked chips in our lineup can’t handle the VI test at all. The Ryzen X redeems itself nicely over the i5-7500, and the Core i7-7700K only barely edges by the Ryzen s. The Core i7-6800K turns in a freakishly good performance here, though, and we can only presume that’s because of its scads of memory bandwidth compared to every other chip in our lineup. In the CPU-only phase of our testing, performance scales as expected with cores and threads, save for the Core i7-6800K’s surprise win.

Intel’s chip scored a little higher on a couple of tests that didn’t require much graphics might, but the overall takeaway is that AMD’s mobile processors are now as good if not better than Intel’s. To see which processors reign supreme, we got ahold of two nearly identical HP Envy x360 2-in-1s — one with Ryzen 5 and one with Intel Core i5 — and put them through our own set of tests.
