Samsung 860 Evo
The only message you’ll get is probably the 5-year limited warranty and Samsung’s bold claim on how good their SSD is. The gtx 1080 8gb has been around for quite some time now and it is still one of the highly regarded SATA III SSD among the PC enthusiasts. UserBenchmark will test your PC and compare the results to other users with the same components.
The test is similar to what we run on storage arrays and enterprise drives, just scaled back to be a better approximation for behaviors employed by the end user. The Samsung 860 EVO comes with a 5-year limited warranty and has MSRP of $94.99, $169.99, $329.99, $649.99, and $1,399.99 for the 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB respectively. Along with the Samsung 860 PRO that was announced at CES 2018 for high-end users, the company has also released a new 860 EVO. The EVO line is aimed for more mainstream uses for notebooks and desktops. There comes a time when we all just need to stop, sit back and think; take a look around and reassess our direction perhaps.
Discussion threads can be closed at any time at our discretion. The 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD fails to deliver in performance and comes at a premium price. For light users though, the EVO will probably get the job done and may be an option when pricing is more aggressive.
That plus the lower cost and the extra form factors mean I’d pick it over the 860 Pro in a heartbeat. Samsung is upping the endurance rating on the SSD 860 EVO series to up to 2,400 TBW on the max-capacity 4TB drive and up to 1,200TB on the 2TB drive we have here. The company is also offering a full 5 year warranty on the drives.
The majority of our testing is performed with our test drive as our boot volume. Our boot volume is 75% full for all OS Disk “C” drive testing to replicate a typical consumer OS volume implementation. We feel that most of you will be utilizing your SSDs for your boot volume and that presenting you with results from an OS volume is more relevant than presenting you with empty secondary volume results. We are utilizing Windows 10 Pro 64-bit OS for all our testing. Empty Windows 10 benchmark screenshots are shown on our MOP (Maxed-Out Performance) page. The 860 EVO is packaged in an attractive black and orange themed box.
Whereas Samsung pinned its last generation 850 Evo with a TBW of 300TB, the 860 Evo is rated at a whopping 1,200 TBW – in other words, four times the endurance. /protectionto see all the coverage offered for each product. Whereas this 480GB Intel drive is priced at $199 (£199, AU$269), the 500GB runs for $169 (£169, AU$245). Beyond that, ultimately nothing seems to be hampering the performance of the M.2 SATA drive, as it ran away with the fastest single file and file folder transfer by almost a full second in each regard. One of the first things that stuck out in our testing was the fact that the M.2 SATA version of the Samsung 860 Evo didn’t hit its maximum rated speeds in CrystalDisk Mark. this is probably because of driver issues, but we hope this is fixed in the near future. Data security – Protect data by selecting security options. The 860 EVO supports AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption and is compliant with TCG Opal and IEEE 1667.
Additionally, we recently updated to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition and with that update, sustained write performance greatly increased. This means our previous transfer tests cannot be compared with those run on the newer version on Windows 10. This is the reason we have drive’s that differ from the rest of the review on this chart. We use DiskBench to time a 28.6GB block composed primarily of incompressible sequential and random data as it’s transferred from our DC P3700 PCIe NVME SSD to our test drive. We then read from a 6GB zip file that’s part of our 28.6GB data block to determine the test drive’s read transfer rate.
The latter is even capable of achieving higher performance. Samsung outfitted the 860 series with a new MJX controller that supports low-power DDR4memory, so it likely has a new integrated memory controller. We also suspect the company built the MJX controller on a smaller lithography that enables lower power consumption, cooler operation, and reduced manufacturing costs. Nice SSD. Would have given all 5 stars but have only had in 1 day. Last SSD I tried locked me out twice in 2 days due to software migration flaws/glitches . They work fast when they work., until they don’t.Samsung data migration easy to do and their Magician software helps keep the SSD current with updates and performance monitoring.
