It’s a cool aesthetic, but it’s also three times more expensive than the standard version. The Rangeman has a bright white LED backlight, while the Mudman features a green electroluminescent backlight. The current G-Shock Mudman was released in 2011 as a descendant to the original g shock watch model, which was especially designed to withstand mud and dirt. Thanks to the sizable bezel of the solar panel though, the screen is also quite small with menu text being rather small. If your eyesight isn’t great you may well have trouble reading what’s on screen.
Out of all the compass bearing watches in the line, the G-Shock Rangeman and the Mudman have the most in common. It’s also not the most intuitive watch to use, with various menus and baby g shock sub menus, and abbreviations of features which don’t make it clear to more novice users what’s going on. Specifically the solar-assisted charging tops up the battery for the GPS.
In “high accuracy” mode, position data are recorded every 4 seconds; in “low accuracy”, every minute; up to 20 tracks can be stored (and re-activated) on the watch. Then, the route needs to be transferred to the watch (or a previously used route deactivated, then the wanted route chosen/activated and transferred). This takes its sweet time and, given how it’s all done on a smartphone touch display, it is not as exact as would be good.

This is another feature that I don’t get enough use out of in my every day, posh, comfy lifestyle though I’m sure it would be invaluable out in the woods. The problem I have with the Rangeman watch is that I have to take the watch off to get an accurate reading. Combined with a compass, you can use your altimeter to navigate through hilly or mountainous terrain.
