Dewalt Dw735 Planer Review
My older Delta is a pain when it comes to changing knives also. I would like to have a 735 but they are pretty expensive compared to the 734. It doesn’t have enough preset settings for thickness. I would have liked a 5/8” setting and possibly a 7/8” setting. You have become my Consumer Report for woodworking tools.
Yes, the DW735 has more features, and can handle slightly wider boards, but the two Dewalt planers are capable of performing the same function. Another difference between them is that the DW735 has a fan assisted dust ejection system to pump or eject the sawdust out of the planer as you plane with it. The slower speed is for when you’re removing a lot of material at once, while the faster speed is for applying a fine finish to the wood to get a fine finish. First, it’s got a higher width capacity of 13 inches, which means you get to plane wider boards with it.
If you won’t be using your benchtop planer that often and are a bit short on space, you might appreciate the fold-up infeed and outfeed tables that make storage a bit easier. These tables do sacrifice a bit of rigidity over solid cast bases, however. The CRAFTSMAN can handle materials up to 12 inches wide and 6 inches thick. For boards up to 8 inches, there’s a maximum depth of cut of up to 3/32-inch.

It is okay to plane most types of painted wood but the blades may dull faster. With their three blades, these planers make 96 to 179 cuts per inch, way faster and more efficient than standard market planers. I picked this planer up from my local Lowes, well not really local, it was the closest Lowes. They offer other planers, but at the time this seemed like the best one for my use. Speed two is supposed to be for taking more material off quicker, but with not as nice of a finish.

We tested how much material would be ‘lost’ to snipe. We had already adjusted each planer’s tables to be flat, and level to the planer bed, prior to the snipe test. DEWALT makes lots of great tools and I seldom find issues with any of them. In this situation they have an AMAZING tool with the DW735 Thickness Planer. In fact, I would say it’s one of the best overall performing tools that I’ve ever reviewed. I also have the DW7350 – Mobile Thickness Planer Stand. The stand is also built from high quality materials and rivals any of the mobile stands I own. In fact, if you’re going to put this on a stand I recommend you buy the DEWALT version compared to an after-market version.
The power feed is chain driven, not a direct gear drive so that simplifies things a little. There’s a primary drive off the motor to the outfeed side & a secondary drive off that to the infeed side. They don’t show a lot of wear & actually still have a slight burr on one side of the teeth. The other side is rounded like you would see w/ normal wear. I’ll suggest to my bud that I continue using it until I’m done & then he can order a new chain & I’ll install it. In fact, when you put it all back together, you should be able to read across the 2 flat blades of the power plug, and see the same conditions when you flip the switch.
I have a room problem and purchsed a Hammer combo jointer/planer. I’ve been too lazy to put the DeWalt 734 up for sale. If there dewalt Hand tools is someone around Metro NYC interested send me a note. I may replace my old Delta with this planer in the near future.
