Lasseter was taught by three members of Disney’s Nine Old Men team of veteran animators—Eric Larson, Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston—and his classmates included future animators and directors like Brad Bird, John Musker, Henry Selick, Tim Burton, razor ride ons and Chris Buck. During his time there, he produced two animated shorts—Lady and the Lamp and Nitemare —which each won the student Academy Award for Animation. His mother’s profession contributed to his growing preoccupation with animation.
According to various news outlets, Lasseter had a history of alleged sexual misconduct towards employees. In June 2018, Disney announced that he would be leaving the company at the end of the year when his contract expired, but took on a consulting role until then. On January 9, 2019, Lasseter was hired to run Skydance Animation. The films he has made have grossed more than $19 billion , making him one of the most successful filmmakers of all time.
Early one morning, he had a dozen or so small cars — a couple of Toyotas, a handful of Volvos, an MG and one pearl white Volkswagen Beetle — parked out in front of the studio commissary. Then Walsh got himself a cup of coffee, sat out on the commissary patio and then watched Disney employees arrived to work that day. And as each number ended, all of those cartoon characters up in the mezzanine & balcony would cheer, applaud or boo. It took nearly six years to get the balance of elements just right. Me personally, I wish that they’d gone ahead with the construction of Paul Bunyan’s longest little bar. There was one at Walt Disney World at the exit of “The Country Bear Jamboree” which operated from October of 1971 through January of 1998. And there was one at Disneyland Park, which operated in the Bear Country section of that theme park from March of 1972 through 2002 (That one got renamed the B’rer Bar in 1989). But aren’t we already building a ride like that over in Tomorrowland?
There aren’t many toys down through history that you can say that about. Fisher Price Power Wheels and other battery powered car for kids have done a good job creating their favorite Disney characters into their favorite ride on toys. Word came down from on high that Bob really, really, REALLY wanted to see some Pixar-themed attractions get put in the pipeline for the Parks. So from a cost efficiency / time management / marketing & promotion point-of-view, it did make sense that Disneyland Park got a clone for “Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin” for May of 2005. Because — after all — DCA had gotten a clone of “Twilight Zone Tower of Terror” for May of 2004. And from an operational point-of-view, you always want to keep that sense of balance going. Especially when it comes to Disney’s Southern California parks.

But as for Raz Island (or Riles Island. I have to admit that I like that Idle Bay Isle name too), Walt knew exactly what he wanted to do. That was going to become a special stand-alone attraction at his vacation kingdom. Photos from the event turned up in all sort of national magazines (“Time, “Life,” “Look”) plus footage take on that day aired on TV news shows around the country. Major media outlets & publications from around the country turned out to cover the event.
