It is single-handedly the biggest upgrade between the original Mavic Mini and the Mini 2, and it makes flying this drone so much easier and enjoyable. When tested using a fully charged battery, the Mavic Air 2 and Mini 2’s flight times are quite similar though the Air 2’s 34 minutes is slightly better than the Mini 2’s 31 minutes. Yes, those extra three minutes could prove useful but you will probably find that you very rarely fly your drone for anything like that period of time. In fact, most of the time you’ll be flying in 10- to 15-minute increments simply because concentration and an element of apprehension when flying drones can be quite tiring.

I typically do top it off when I charge the drone batteries though, just out of habit. What you won’t find on this drone are obstacle avoidance sensors, so you do need to be very careful about how you fly it. But despite not having any sensors, I actually felt more adventurous with the Mini — it is so small you can easily squeeze it through tighter spaces. I found myself trying things that I normally wouldn’t try with a heavier and more expensive drone. The downside of not having any sensors is that it also means you won’t find a lot of the automated, preprogrammed flight modes. The autonomous Active track mode isn’t here, nor can you create hyperlapses.

Yup, you get them for all the pano modes you get a folder full of RAW images. It’s not by default though, so you do need to go into that menu and enable JPEG+RAW to get all future panos to output the dual shots. It basically crops down the spherical 360 photo resolution to a 4MB image, which is kinda so-so. However, it does at last provide all the original 26 photos in both JPG & DNG, so one can re-stitch to something far higher. I included an example set in the file share linked up above.

As expected, the camera has difficulties with highlight in bright sunlight, so take the exposures as raw files, and adjust them in the finishing. Such small image chips suffer from image noise in low light. This is fact of life, but you only notice this in pictures taken in very low light. The advice is again to choose raw files, which gives much better control of image noise in the post-processing of the images, than whether the camera should choose noise reduction even on jpeg images. The upgraded Mini 2 can fly farther and withstand more wind than the previous version, and it can be purchased in two versions.
When it comes to settings you can configure, you’ve got a handful. This is where you start to see some of the core differences compared to other higher-end DJI products. First is the safety tab, which allows you to set a max altitude and max distance, as well as the Automatic Return to Home Altitude. For max altitude I set something well below the max legal limits , and then for the max distance I usually do the same. For the RTH Altitude I actually tend to go a bit higher to 50m when I remember (which I didn’t here).
