Schwinn did come back with a bike that assembled in the USA called the Homegrown, which is well-known in the mountain biking community, but it has since been discontinued. As long as you could figure out how to get racks installed (since many top-end bikes like this one lacked rack eyelets) they worked great. In 1938, Frank W. Schwinn officially introduced the Paramount series. Developed from experiences gained in racing, Schwinn established Paramount as their answer to high-end, professional competition bicycles. The Paramount used high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel alloy schwinn bicycles tubing and expensive brass lug-brazed construction. During the next twenty years, most of the Paramount bikes would be built in limited numbers at a small frame shop headed by Wastyn, in spite of Schwinn’s continued efforts to bring all frame production into the factory.
Like the brown 1970 Sting-Ray that we have elsewhere in this museum section, this BMX bike started out as just another Schwinn but was heavily modified to handle the rigors of bicycle motocross action. Proprietary Schwinn-labeled parts make up the component group, with silky-smooth hubs and headset, and a light steel crankset. The bars were Schwinn approved, and the adjustable stem could position the handlebars below or above the slider. 18-speed Shimano drivetrain and SX19 rim alloy disc hubs provide great performance. Everyone has a unique set of buying criteria and budget constraints, so this is a hard question to answer. I haven’t tested any bikes that cost less than this one (unless you count the non-dropper version of the Axum) but a quick look at 29er mountain bikes priced around $500 makes the Axum look pretty good. Few others come with a one-by drivetrain and none have dropper posts.

With their aging product line, Schwinn failed to dominate the huge sport bike boom of 1971–1975, which saw millions of 10-speed bicycles sold to new cyclists. Schwinn did allow some dealers to sell imported road racing bikes, and by 1973 was using the Schwinn name on the Le Tour, a Japanese-made low-cost sport/touring 10-speed bicycle. Schwinn developed strong trading relationships with two Japanese bicycle manufacturers in particular, Bridgestone and National/Panasonic. Schwinn soon had a range of low, mid- and upper-level bicycles all imported from Japan.
