Having a barometer on your wrist means that you’re much less likely to get caught in the rain when you’re out hiking or whatever it is you people do outside. Before the days of weathermen and weather apps, we had to figure out ourselves if it was going to rain. One thing we realized is that when the air pressure dropped, a storm was likely on its way. Further, I prefer the resin strap keeper, not so happy with the steel versions. The GW-9400 Rangeman is the quintessential modern Casio G-Shock watch and has arguably replaced the Frogman as the most desirable all-digital G-Shock.
I was originally looking at the GPW series, and even know the global satellite is cool, to change timezones it really wasn’t worth spending over 700 for that watch when you got more with this one. I love having all the features of the pro-trek in a g-shock and the steel buttons are not only functional but look great too. Thanks to recent advancements, Casio was able to produce even smaller electronic components, making the RANGEMAN one of the first to employ the new Shock Resistant Triple Sensor technology. Constructed of metal, with an oversized, textured surface, the watch’s design ensures accessibility of information even with a gloved hand. Multi-Band Atomic Timekeeping – The Rangeman receives time calibration radio signals for accurate timekeeping at all times. You can set the watch to manually receive signals, or auto-receive signals up to 6 times per day.
I’ll be wearing mine to the beach a lot this summer, where hopefully the clear straps will combat my annual watch-tan. It can pretty much go anywhere, as I wanted and expected when I bought it, and that can include going out to eat, a round of golf, hanging out by a pool, and maybe even checking baby g shock out an outdoor concert. I just bought Dead & Company tix, so you can probably guess which other G-Shock is poised for that show. But pretty much anything I might want to get up to this summer, my CasiOak has me covered. Both the Rangeman and the Mudman are shock resistant and can withstand temperatures as low as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The mineral glass protecting the face is sealed tighter and tenser than a handshake between Djokovic and Federer. The Rangeman’s light is brighter, and the white provides a bolder contrast with the watch’s digits. The Rangeman and Mudman have similar resin bands with identical wear. They’re both robust and suitably match their respective watch faces. The Rangeman places the date and the day in the same section and isolates the time, which I think makes more sense and looks less crowded.
They are almost always named with a “man” suffix after the initial Frogman model which itself was named for scuba divers. Three models, the Mudman, Gaussman, Raysman and Rangeman all feature a thick rubber outer layer that surrounds the buttons and case completely, ensuring that they offer mud-resistance. The Master of G watches ceased production in 2000, but there were signs Casio was keen to keep the range alive, not just with limited edition releases but with re-designs of some of the old models. The GW-9400 is water resistant , mud resistant , shock resistant, and quite possibly kid resistant. For a solar powered “ABC” watch with a ton of features that can stand up to the abuse the Rangeman can and still look great, I think the price is a steal. I have been threw a number of casios but find this one to the be the best for the cost.
Subsequent new models have since followed which have more advanced features. The Rangeman series was introduced in 2013 and has ABC features, along with added GPS connectivity being introduced in 2018. The MASTER line was designed for land, aviation or sea related activities. The watches in the MASTER line include baby g shock the Mudmaster , the Gravitymaster and the Gulfmaster . My previous watch was a Casio, but lacked the atomic time signal, and the ability to recharge with sunlight. It also had a blue background, which made the numbers difficult to see. This one resolves all of those issues, and provides features baby g shock I hadn’t anticipated. The interface is delightfully intuitive, while offering a surprising number of features. G-Shock Rangeman watches are marketed as a men’s watch, but of course, they are suitable for anyone who loves being out in nature.
It’s also the easier watch to have if you travel a lot. This means that the Rangeman is a fundamentally better timekeeper than the Mudman. I have the tendency to fall into a rabbit hole of scrolling when I use my phone to tell the time. If you’re like me, and you wear a watch predominantly to have the time on your person, the Rangeman is a fully accurate and reliable option. Tough Solar is Casio’s proprietary charging technology.
The screen is divided into different sections to make it easier to read all of the information that is presented. Naturally, the time is presented with the largest font so a quick glance at the wrist is all it takes.
