On October 28, 2011, Aramis and Designer Fragrances, a division of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., and Tory Burch LLC announced the signing of a multiyear agreement for the exclusive worldwide license of the Tory Burch fragrance business. This partnership marked Tory Burch’s first step into the beauty industry. The first Tory Burch fragrance products were introduced in 2013. Over the next 15 years, they expanded the range and continued to sell their products in the United States.
The Estée Lauder Companies product goes through animal testing where required by law by its country government. The Chinese government requires testing on animals for many cosmetic products. This causes controversy for smaller brands that are “cruelty free” but were acquired by Estée Lauder. In 2016, the company acquired Becca Cosmetics, their first color cosmetic group acquisition since Smashbox in 2010. In November 2016, the company made its largest acquisition to date by acquiring California-based cosmetics company Too Faced for US$1.45 billion.
Estée Lauder was born Josephine Esther Mentzer in Queens, New York, to Max and Rose Mentzer, a Hungarian immigrant with a French Catholic mother and Jewish father. Rose, who lived until the age of eighty-eight, warned Estée about the harmful effects of the sun; she herself always wore gloves and carried a parasol Estee Lauder makeup to guard against its rays. Estée remembered this lesson but also remembered how embarrassed she was by her mother’s parasol and her thick accent, as well as by the immigrant behavior of both her parents. She was the youngest of the Mentzer children, who grew up Jewish in a mostly Italian neighborhood.

The company opened its first department store counter in Saks Fifth Avenue, just two years later. It’s a tough choice between the two, each of which comes with $150 worth of beautifying goodies. Estée Lauder became a household name for beauty thanks to the luxurious makeup, lotions, and perfumes she created. Born to a working-class, immigrant family, Lauder was determined to succeed in American society. Her uncle, a chemist who created face creams in his home laboratory, encouraged Lauder to assist him, create her own concoctions, and market products to friends and local salons. Lauder helped pioneer free giveaways and relied on word-of-mouth marketing, but also kept her products in high-end department stores to make them more desirable.
After years of operating her cosmetics business, Lauder made it official in 1946 by forming the corporation that still bears her name today. She and her husband were the entire company at the time, and they offered only a handful of products. They were also making these items using the kitchen of a former restaurant. Saks Fifth Avenue ordered $800 in her products, which sold out in two days.
