Using 1920×1080 resolution, Fire Strike shows off some realistic enough graphics and is quite taxing on hardware. We saw a little bit of that in games like Project Cars 2, Prey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. But we also saw a lot of gains in the vicinity of 7-13%, which is how we arrived at a 10% improvement on average.
As I wrote above, the big change here is the move to faster GDDR6 memory. The GTX 1660 card uses GDDR5 memory clocked at 8Gb/s, while the Super version is sporting 14GB/s modules found on Nvidia’s higher-end GPUs. Though it uses the same 192-bit memory bus as the non-super version, the extra fast memory has allowed bandwidth to increase from 192.1GB/s to a whopping 336GB/s, which is a whopping 75 percent increase. Nvidia claims this upgrade is good for up to 20 percent more performance compared to the GTX 1660.
As the new cards are a mid-generation kicker of a mainstream card, there aren’t any reference cards to speak of here. Instead, this is a pure virtual launch, with all of the cards on the market being partner designs. As time goes on, we will build a new database of results with results generated from this test system. For now, we include GPUs that offer similar performance to the card under review. In this case we have two Nvidia cards, a Gigabyte GTX 1650 and an EVGA GTX 1660 Ti.
Despite using a much cheaper CPU than my test system, there was no difference in the frame rates in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with the Scan Gamer PC managing a healthy minimum frame rate of 54fps. Despite the higher performance than the GTX GB in every test, sometimes significantly so, the GTX 1660 used very little extra gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb power – just 2W under load and with a similar idle power draw too. The Pascal range of cards prided itself on its efficiency and with near 30% more performance here on occasions, Turing is clearly doing the same. Finally, the graphics card draws about 127.4W on extreme load, so a 500W power supply should be good enough.
The clock speeds of the card would be maintained at 1530 MHz base and 1785 MHz boost. In terms of memory, the card would receive a big upgrade in the form of GDDR6 which was missing on the existing GTX 1660. The GTX 1660 SUPER with 6 GB GDDR6 memory would feature 14 Gbps dies running across a 192-bit bus interface to deliver a total bandwidth of 336 GB/s. We’ve seen this in a few games and with Project Cars 2 we have yet another example where the extra memory bandwidth leads to no performance uplift, just an extra frame for the 1660 Super over the non-super version. Nvidia isn’t quite done with its Turing architecture just yet, and is releasing what is likely to be the final graphics cards in its product stack, plugging two holes to complete its lineup.
