Personally, I find the GA A1 to be a fine daily watch, but only if I’m using it for the sole purpose of telling the time. If I need to use the digital functions or need to check the time at night a lot, then I would prefer to use another G-Shock. (Other GA-2100 models would be better suited for nighttime use than the GA A1.) For me, the GA-2100 could never be my only watch, but I’m happy to have it as part of my small collection. There is no doubt that the similarity has garnered the GA-2100 a lot of attention online, which gave it more publicity than other recent models.
The blackout GA A1, one of three debut models from 2019, is still widely sold out and unavailable. The new GA-2110SU-3A (GA2110SU-3A in the U.S.) has been selling out quickly at some American retailers. Based on my own experience and the reactions of others, the reasons are very simple. An appearance slim, compact, and simple intentionally overturns the notion that G-SHOCK watches are always massive. Heir to the essence of the very first G-SHOCK, the GA-2100 delivers the very essence of functional beauty.
I don’t think we’ve seen the last of this model. I have small hands and a relatively narrow 6.5” wrist – not the best place to put a large, chunky watch. And then the G-SHOCK GA-2100 series caught my eye – and fit my wrist. Thanks to its Carbon Core Guard architecture, the GA-2100 is the thinnest analog-digital G-SHOCK’s ever made. Well, it was until sales of the “Casioak” went nuts . Look, I’m not saying you can pair this with “black tie” and come off looking clever.
Should a hand or both hands obscure the digital screen, pressing the light and mode switches rotates the hands away from the screen. A touch of the mode button returns them to their proper baby g shock positions. In normal use, the minute hand leaps forward a precise third of a minute every 20 seconds. The name G-SHOCK has become a byword for independence and pushing the limits.
Last year the all black model – an unlimited, in-production piece – was trading above RRP on the grey market after shops sold out. The Casio GA-2100 series has the same 8-sided bezel design, and it is no surprise that significant parallels have been drawn between the external appearance of the two watches. But let us be clear, this is where that comparison ends. Compare the new and vintage Casio models and you can clearly see the family trait, nevertheless the moniker of “CasiOak” has stuck and the GA-2100 will forever be known as such. The hands on the GA A1 do feature lume, but it isn’t the same “Neobrite” on other GA models, and it isn’t nearly as effective. Though the LED backlight on the LCD is excellent, the second LED light on the GA A1 performs a poor job of lighting the hands and markings in the dark.
You can follow his cycling and snowboarding adventures on Instagram as he pursues the perfect 3-watch collection. I’ve never taken a slam that damaged a watch case more than some superficial scuffs. The G-Shock carbon core was never a concern for me. Its spring bar failure that ultimately leads to loss is what you need to worry about. A fanned rubber strap takes the torque load off the actual spring bar in the event of going full scorpion down an icy landing in the terrain park. A few of my coworkers thought that the CasiOak was a “cheap Wal-Mart watch”.
