Founded in 1947, Christian Dior revolutionized fashion with his visionary designs, establishing the legacy of the house of Dior. Dior brings its legendary French savoir-faire, rich heritage and luxurious products to South Coast Plaza. Stylish boxy ’60s jackets with graphic statement pockets mixed with sporty vests and dresses that channeled a tennis skirt. The main let down of the otherwise tasteful collection were a series of silken boxer pajamas — which made the house appear like it was trying too hard to be youthful. With objects drawn primarily from the Dior archives, the exhibition includes a vast array of over two hundred haute couture garments as well as photographs, archival videos, sketches, vintage perfume elements, accessories, and works from the Museum’s collection. The haute couture on view exemplifies many of the French couturier’s fabled silhouettes, including the “New Look,” which debuted in 1947. In only ten years, from 1947 to 1957, Christian Lancome makeup revolutionized the conventions of elegance and femininity, designing collections infused with dreams and enchantment. The man who set out to be an architect offered women his vision of beauty through elegant lines, his name eventually becoming synonymous with French luxury all around the world. This exhibition is organized by the DAM and curated by Florence Müller, the DAM’s Avenir Foundation Curator of Textile Art and Fashion. It features exhibition design by internationally renowned architect Shohei Shigematsu, principal of OMA New York. Following its run at the DAM, this exhibition will travel to the Dallas Museum of Art.

In 1942, when left the army, he joined the fashion house of Lucien Lelong, where he and Balmain were the primary designers. His sister, Catherine (1917–2008), served as a member of the French Resistance, was captured by the Gestapo, and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, where she was incarcerated until her liberation in May 1945. In 1947, he named his debut fragrance, Miss Dior in tribute to his sister. In 1946 Marcel Boussac, a successful entrepreneur known as the richest man in France, invited Dior to design for Philippe et Gaston, a Paris fashion house launched in 1925. Dior refused, wishing to make a fresh start under his own name rather than reviving an old brand. On 8 December 1946, with Boussac’s backing, Dior founded his fashion house.
