These are nice glasses, but slightly different from my older 2140 Wayfarers. The frames and lenses are a little more upright and a little less rakish. Also, the arms are not quite as curved as my older pair. While this ray ban caravan is different, these actually fit me nicer because they don’t sit on my cheeks like my older pair. I like them and would recommend these sun glasses to friends looking for a lower cost “genuine” Ray Ban Wayfarer.
From classic and mirrored lenses to polarized lenses, Ray-Ban has sunglasses for everyone. The slightly glossy, onyx frames featured above are the most classic option, though you can choose from a few other frame/lens color combinations on Amazon, as well. Wayfarers soon became cultural shorthand for the rebellious rock and roll spirit, as immortalized by James Dean and other celebrities. The 1950s revival that fueled the glasses’ popularity in the 1980s lost momentum, and Wayfarers were outcompeted by wraparound frames. During the slump of the 1990s, Ray-Ban’s parent company, Bausch & Lomb was facing pressure from competitors like Oakley. In 1999, Bausch & Lomb sold Ray-Ban to Luxottica Group S.p.A. of Italy for $640 million.
Wayfarers were designed in 1952 by American optical designer Raymond Stegeman, who worked for Bausch & Lomb, Ray-Ban’s parent company at that time. The Ray-Ban®, Wayfarer®, is simply the most recognizable style in sunglasses. The distinct shape is paired with the traditional Ray-Ban signature logo on the sculpted temples.
