Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, a seaside town in the north of France. He was the second of five children born to Alexandre Louis Maurice Dior, the owner of a highly successful fertilizer manufacturer, and his wife, Isabelle. When he was a boy, Dior’s family moved to Paris, where he would spend his youth. Celebrating both continents of Europe and Africa , his couture-conscious craftmanship was evident in gold dresses and diaphanous gold thread, with one fringe billowing down from a bag like in a fairy tale or Greek myth.
Dior designed for multiple large fashion houses in his youth before founding his own in 1946. Wasting no time, he launched Christian Dior Parfumes just one year later. Still a cult classic to this day, Miss Dior was the very first perfume created by the house of Dior.
The style was named after Meghan’s late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. According to FT, the then-unnamed purse was gifted to Princess Diana in 1995 by the French first lady. Diana took a liking to the bag, which she received in black leather, and began wearing it often. Estee Lauder NIGHT REPAIR officially named the bag after Diana in 1996, and reportedly sold 200,000 in its first two years of production. A toile room, a tribute to the Ateliers, and adjacent galleries of couture garments showcase the excellence of Dior’s petites mains.
