While Paco Rabanne Pour Homme turns sweet and musky, Polo stays more green, mossy and earthy, more outdoorsy and crisp. I definitely get some caraway or cumin, and tobacco . But there is also just a hint of sweetness in the background that binds together the green, earthy and spicy notes. But those who grew tired of its ubiquitous presence 3 decades ago, should reassess Polo, having had enough time elapse to heal those wounds that result from our reactions to something all too familiar. (This can also be said for many popular “men’s powerhouse fragrances” from the late 70’s and 80’s). I have re-acquired many fragrances in the last 18 months that I once wore back in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, but let a couple of decades elapse before replenishing stock and wearing them again.
There’s really nothing like it such a distinctive smell. Which is odd considering how often I see many other green fragrances get lazily compared to it. Has an ashy, herbal oakmoss feel held together with the bitter licorice-like absinthe chord. Pine needles, juniper, woods, florals, vetiver and resins add to the dry, country green/piney, masculine character. Further accentuated by the pepper, musk and tobacco. Although it conjures up images of gentlemans country clubs and polo matches it doesn’t really smell grassy as such more herbal, mossy pine forest and even a little dirty, earthy and musty just brilliant.
This said, I would never ever wear this. I can’t imagine any occasion that would be suitable for it and it smells way too outdated. The dark grey suit and lace-up leather shoes come next with the tortoise-shell rimmed glasses and that handsome mustache neatly trimmed. This fragrance is fresh, grassy and pleasant, but I can’t go out smelling as immaculate as, uhm, the Virgin Mary. If my nose had no association with that, I would have loved this for everyday use. It has a great longevity and good sillage.
This scent still insinuates instant credibility and faux sophistication upon even the most banal and superficially unsophisticated older men. A work of art in its capturing of the alpine forest and a timeless classic original. Nobody should be without this one in their arsenal, as it simply has first rate longevity and character. One of the five most important colognes of the 20th century. Despite being overused and over-worn, still maintains its dignity. It’s not a timeless scent, it is a very specific to its time scent, and that time is gone .
I don’t know why i was not interested in that perfume. Bought a travel spray out of a gift set. I think Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt this is what Quorum wants to smell like but is harsher. Distinct scent for a discerning man.
When it dries down to the its basenotes, the pine gives off a damp sweetness. I first smelled this on my friend who wore a Chaps Ralph Lauren brown leather jacket. It is burned in my memory as having a relation to leather, yet the green notes of pine seem to dominate this wonderful scent.
