The selection of a thickness planer basically comes down to two size categories; small portable (albeit real heavy to be portable!), or very large stand alone machines. The stand alone machines are far too large for my shop so I was left searching the 13″ planer category. Frankly, I don’t think dewalt Hand tools we can expect to see this planer bundle priced any lower than this, at least not anytime soon. This is the second time I have ever seen the price drop down below $500. Right now, the DW735 planer, which doesn’t come with the infeed and outfeed tables or spare blades, is priced at $549.

All we did was point the heater at the back of the planer and it worked fine. I also have this planer, I have to say I “settled” for this when I couldn’t afford the 735. First time I used it any remorse for not getting the larger planer went away, this one works like a champ. Probably why its been around for so long with no revisions. You are correct that changing the blades on the planer is about 5,000 times easier than my jointer. I probably should have mentioned that in the thing’s defense.

It is engineered more like a stationary planer, built around four threaded rods over which the head moves up and down. Based on the specifications, the DW733 and DW734 don’t seem to differ that much from the DW735. They have about the same capacity, the same power, and are only slightly lighter than the DW735. The only significant difference is that the DW733 has two resharpenable blades, while the DW734 has three, two-sided, disposable blades. With a dust assisted dust ejection and dust port, you can easily handle and contain all the dust produced while working with the planer.
