Set atop a 5′ tripod the DeWalt, right, needs to be about 10′ away from a wall for the vertical line to run floor to ceiling. Here it’s about 8′ away and the line still doesn’t hit the floor. The Makita, left, on a 5′ tripod not only hits the floor but comes dewalt accessories to within 3′ of the tripod base. But working in small rooms on a tripod is easier with the Makita. The Dewalt DW088LG 12-volt laser uses a T-Stak box, thus giving it the “best case award.” Second was the Bosch case, which resembles their older jig saw cases.

Dual-slope means that the line will move along both the X axis and Y axis. X mode is used often to “walk” the line in vertical mode for aligning metal track. Y is used to angle the line in horizontal mode for setting slope or setting pitch on a driveway. The big difference between laser lines and laser spots is spots are greatly more visible in bright light and across distance. The Bosch GLL 100 G Green-Beam Self-Leveling Cross-Line Laser uses green-beam technology, and has a working range up to 100 Ft. This laser features a second plumb line that forms a 90-degree intersecting line on the floor and ceiling, great for installing lighting or cabinetry. A built-in magnetic pivot bracket mounts easily on metal surfaces for added convenience. This laser also features a micro adjust knob for precise alignment of 90-degree intersecting lines over greater distances. Red dewalt Hand tools light uses less battery power but is more difficult to see outdoors. Green lasers are more expensive, use more battery power, and are potentially more dangerous to your eyes, but are also easier to see outdoors and over lengthy distances. The thing that sets this one apart from the competition is the high quality laser level you get at a budget price point.

Spot lasers differ from line lasers in that they project a small circle of light onto the surface your laser is focused on. They are intended for transferring points from one surface to another. This could be for making sure a joist or wall is plumb or to ensure pipes traveling from floor to floor are plumb. Spot lasers are most commonly used for plumbing installation, electrical work, HVAC, and framing applications.
