This laser features a second plumb line that forms a 90-degree intersecting line on the floor and ceiling, great for installing lighting or cabinetry. A built-in magnetic pivot bracket mounts easily on metal surfaces for added convenience. This laser also features a micro adjust knob for precise alignment of 90-degree intersecting lines over greater distances. Red light uses less battery power but is more difficult to see outdoors. Green lasers are more expensive, use more battery power, and are potentially more dangerous to your eyes, but are also easier to see outdoors and over lengthy distances. This level can produce a bright horizontal, vertical, or cross line on any surface up to 50 feet away, meaning it can handle most rooms around the home. The battery configuration is subtly indicated on the battery compartment lid. The DW088CG is powered by three AA batteries, and has an accuracy of +/- 1/8” at 30-feet. The bottom of the laser allows a tripod mount of ¼”-20 threaded insert. The mounting bracket allows the laser to rotate 180 degrees and has two magnets. It can easily sit on the floor, and has an included suspended ceiling grid clamp.

I have other 12-volt Dewalt tools which allow me the option of using my other 12-volt batteries, if needed. The cleanest, thinnest line was the Stabila LAX300 G. This is the line that will give you the MOST ACCURATE indication. Second to the Stabila, was the Bosch GLL 100 G laser which was also very clean. The Dewalt lines were super bright, thick and a bit fuzzy.

Set atop a 5′ tripod the DeWalt, right, needs to be about 10′ away from a wall for the vertical line to run floor to ceiling. Here it’s about 8′ away and the line still doesn’t hit the floor. The Makita, left, on a 5′ tripod not only hits the floor but comes dewalt accessories to within 3′ of the tripod base. But working in small rooms on a tripod is easier with the Makita. The Dewalt DW088LG 12-volt laser uses a T-Stak box, thus giving it the “best case award.” Second was the Bosch case, which resembles their older jig saw cases.
