Initially it’s a blast of pine, but that passes quickly, and then it’s straight up tobacco (to my nose, the wife says “pine”). There is no more iconic bottle in all of perfumery. Very similar to Paco Rabanne pour homme but it lasts much longer and doesn’t have that gross soapy opening pour homme does. I really love this fragrance but performance for me is disappointing, I currently have 2018 batch . First thing that hit me was a blast of tobacco; not the fresh kind, but resinous, dried tobacco. Took me right back to my grandmother’s house, sitting next to her while she smoked. (Though Polo itself is not smoky.) Amazing what scents can do to your memories. Once it dried down, it turned into a mix of black pepper and a freshly mowed lawn.
I remember thinking that I hated the smell on him — which amazes me, because today I love it so much that I want it as part of my permanent collection. Some one said that it smells like death. I completely agree because it is plain herbal smell with no unpleasant or pleasant effect. This neutrality gives it a status of ‘only for men’.
