Initially it’s a blast of pine, but that passes quickly, and then it’s straight up tobacco (to my nose, the wife says “pine”). I didn’t care for it at first, but with each successive wear, it’s wearing me down. I now find it intriguing and want to get to know it better.
Bought a travel spray out of a gift set. Right after a shower it’s on point. I think this is what Quorum wants to smell like but is harsher. Distinct scent for a discerning man. My parents just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this week and of course he wore Polo when he took mom out to dinner in his best tweed suit.

The heart is strong and masculine as conifer woods, decorated with notes of patchouli, oakmoss and vetiver. The base contains leather, tobacco and thyme, which create a wonderful, intensive trail. Polo is one of the two first perfumes by Ralph Lauren and it was created by Carlos Benaim in 1978. A scent with a strong, spiced woodsy concentration that offers a burst of flavor. Most likely to people who haven´t ever inhaled British Sterling or Canoe.
I own two formulas – a bottle from 1997 and a bottle from 2014. The so called “vintage” is heavier on leather and has much darker pine note. The newer one is focused on the cigarette “ash” and has a lighter green pine note . It opens up green but definitely it’s dark green and ashy. Soon the tobacco joins – I’ve heard some saying it smells like a cigarette ash tray – I don’t mind.
I’m not sure what the perfumer originally intended to evoke with this scent but in the light of typical colognes these days I smell a pipe smoking hairy lumberjack. Not a pansy rich polo player with palm olive hands. Kinda makes me wish I was in high school in the early 80s when this was a normal everyday scent. Today’s version of Polo Green only lasts about 2 hours on me and then it’s a skin scent. The OG lasted for 12 or more hours and it still projected and had great silage through the day.
But that being said, Polo is a classic. Hopefully, it will stay around for a long, long time. Workplaces and society in general are less tolerant of fragrances than they used to be. It has impacted Polo’s wearability in 2019, and you don’t smell it as much as you used to. Supposedly, it’s been reformulated to reflect this and I’ve read that a lot of men prefer the vintage Cosmair formula to today’s version. One of my favourite frangraces, real masculine smell with great longevity, which gives you time to enjoy it in its different stages.starts of with grassy notes than finishes off with a leathery scent.
I get the juniper berry, the pine, basil & artemisa, all of which make this very dark, green, and herbal. The other spices and notes are blended polo dress shirts together beautifully. This is a very good fragrance and a grown-up classic for sure. There is very little out there today that smells like this.
The 2019 bottle I tried yesterday seems to have sorted that out. It was much more of a fresh-pencil-shavings cedar/pine opening and quite pleasant the whole Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt way through. All the nastiness was gone and replaced with a smooth, creamy, earthiness that progressed logically into the drydown that we all know and love.
