I’m apprehensive about bashing this one (but I will- it’s forthcoming) because it’s such a well loved classic. It comes from a different era when fragrances were bolder polo dress shirts and you got more bang for your buck. But I gotta tell ya, this stuff is polarizing! You’re either gonna love it or hate it. some moss and very little leather.

I do also get the geranium, jasmine and chamomile. In fact, everything is well balanced and well blended. I can see this as a year round fragrance, but probably best suited to the cooler type of weather, especially spring, where it reminds me of a crisp, polo dress shirts spring morning, with dew still on the grass. This is like walking through a cool pine forest. This is a love from me and I believe that if you love greenness, nature and green, spicy, herbal, grassy fragrances generally, then you will love this.

This is leafy and dry tobacco rolled up with a bunch of Asian spices just off the ship from Portuguese and Dutch traders back from Malaysia and Indonesia. Italians, Germans and Brits until Polo unleashed this dirty frontiersman like woody monster on the buying public. Do you like warm spice, earthy tobacco, muddy roots, green and damp decaying woods in the late evening just a few degrees above freezing?

Polo by Ralph Lauren (“Polo Green”) is one that I bought again. It’s somewhat divisive; I get the best and worst comments on this one, but the good comments outweigh the bad by far. On the initial spray you definitely get the pine and the patchouli, almost overwhelming.

As long as I live the green-bottled Polo will forever be “my father” in my memory. Now and long after he passes away I will keep a bottle to remind me of him. That said, I’m in my 30’s and I don’t mind wearing this selectively around the holiday season. It will never be a daily go-to or even one that gets more than 2 or 3 wearings in a year for me, but it has it’s place in my collection. This is miles away from playful and easygoing. It is serious, dark, earthy, a bit rough, but also fresh and clean.

Smells green all day long – if you would like something more cleaner and less daring then floris 1962 is an option. A true Masterpiece of art in fragrance. All others should bow down before the great green Polo god. Lasts 4 to 5 hours on me, and radiates around 5 feet away.

It will create an aura of old man though. I’m thinking 50+ with a limp and a beer belly. Definitely clean shaven, maybe a mustache. I mean, I do like it and will probably buy a bottle, but I have a few years before I get there. Lately, it seems like every other fragrance either smells too much alike, doesn’t perform or starts out unique and then simmers down to the same old base notes. I think this fragrance is genius, and, smelled without any period associations, is an amazing, unique smell.

I only wear this around the house occasionally in the fall and winter months because I love the smell. This is my wife’s favorite of all my fragrances and will always have a place in my collection. Polo jeans clothing often features a logo of a polo player on a horse. The signature polo shirt has the logo sewn in varying sizes and contrasting colors while other, more formal pieces like the cashmere sweater may have the logo on a tag or in a more discrete location. Polo is also associated with classic, timeless styles and clean lines in clothing silhouettes. Pine and fir with strong notes of tobacco in a very masculine way.
