It is almost like the spicy notes are coming through better now as I could mostly only smell a wet green grass note before. So I do think it comes across as a lot more balanced and richer now. I wore this infrequently in high school and only recently reacquired it.
Not sure about the performance, though — seems to morph into a skin scent as fast as the two aforementioned classics nowadays. I started wearing this amazing scent in college in the early 80’s. It was my only fragrance for 30 years. I have gone through so many bottles, I have lost count. The Warner bottles were the best fragrance ever made.

Perhaps this sort of thing made a lasting impression on me as a kid – Brut and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas, I don’t know. But I’m learning that the woodsy/green/leathers with earthy patch/vetiver/oakmoss drydowns are usually winners for me. The tobacco note in Polo, as elsewhere, only serves to make me love this more. Got a 237ml bottle of this as Xmas present to myself – ‘cos I is werf it. I never wore this on a regular basis in the past but I believe the recently purchased bottle I have, though true to what I remember, has the overall heft and base notes dialed back.
I feel limited wearing this as a lot of people I come into contact with don’t like it. Friends that have smelled it often have a face of disgust and say that it smells like a grandpa, or that it is strong, but I rarely have experienced someone actually liking it. Best way I can describe it is that it smells like money. Seriously, the old style paper notes, imagine a fat roll of money and sniff it. Not the performance monster it was but still lasts for days on end on clothes. My uncle had had this as his signature scent for over 30 years.
Mainly it seems very green, fresh, and spicy. Vintage Cosmair Polo is by far the king of all fragrances to me alone I suppose. I purchased my first bottle in 1982 and I couldn’t get enough of it. Mind blowing good, everyone wore it and the ladies liked it too. It was the only fragrance I wore until 1994 when my girlfriend bought me Dolce and Gabbana Pour Homme.
