I have re-acquired many fragrances in the last 18 months that I once wore back in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, but let a couple of decades elapse before replenishing stock and wearing them again. One of my favourite frangraces, real masculine smell with great longevity, which gives you time to enjoy it in its different stages.starts of with grassy notes than finishes off with a leathery scent. It’s my signature scent and I have almost 40 fragrances so I have tried a lot. Still, it’s not a blind buy because the smell is so distinct. Polo by Ralph Lauren (“Polo Green”) is one that I bought again. It’s somewhat divisive; I get the best and worst comments on this one, but the good comments outweigh the bad by far.
Now if you do some research, there are Warner, Cosmair, and Luxury Products versions of Polo. The Warner is the original formulation with the best longevity and performance. The Cosmair is the more balanced scent version of the 3 formulations. The Luxury Products reformulation is the current formulation being sold today, needless to say it is the inferior of the 3.
Today it is quite disliked as feminine fragrances like Dior Homme Intense an Parfum rule the day. We went from masculine 80s frags to sweet feminine fragrances that people call manly, Polo Ralph Lauren t shirt to me, oddly enough, making me thing if cognitive dissonance. Think of it this way, would most people call the smell of a rose, masculine? Any honest person would of course say no.
This style provides the trimmest silhouette and looks great with a pair of men’s seersucker shorts or men’s slim fit chinos. Shop men’s dress shirts for additional options for a more formal setting. Pine and fir with strong notes of tobacco in a very masculine way.
So I do think it comes across as a lot more balanced and richer now. I’m not sure why this scent is so polarizing, but it definitely can be too overwhelming for some occasions. It’s just such an amazing green leathery tobacco-ey scent that smells like money to me. I still have about 5 mL left in my 1995 bottle, so I can’t judge the current formulation. This 90’s batch is incredibly powerful, long lasting, and rich. An all time classic, although not one that fits well with many occasions due to it’s strength and complexity.
When it dries down to the its basenotes, the pine gives off a damp sweetness. I never knew anybody in my background who wore Polo. My only childhood association was a teacher who reminisced that men splashed it on at the gym. I became acquainted with it when I began selling fragrances at a department store and let me tell you, I sold a lot of Polo. We called it Polo green and when we broke a bottle the whole store knew.
It smells like the leather jacket of a man who chain smokes cigars, rides his horse through the woods to his house where he cooks middle eastern cuisine over an open fire. And it lasts ALL DAY LONG. If it were toned down a little, and mixed with a little more of the floral, I’d probably really enjoy it. Polo lent an air of legitimacy to American made fragrance releases and reasserted it with its clothing line. A truly American original that put American fragrances on the same par with European colognes and re-defined the barriers of the industry. The original Polo has been my father’s signature and preferred scent since its original launch when he was a teenager! Since I was a small child I loved the smell because it IS my daddy.
The Paneled Merino Wool Sweater is made from a quilted tartan and merino blend. The sweater features a zip-front closure and lots of extra insulation for keeping warm during cool weather. The sleeves are navy while the tartan pattern is in a mixture of green, blue, and black. Crafted out of soft cotton, this collared shirt features a small Polo Ralph Lauren embellishment at the left chest. All and all, a lovely scent that will be around for decades, those that want a “modern” perfume, go to the corner CVS and get a cheap AXE. There is no age for a great fragrance, and Polo is one of those ageless perfumes that will become a classic.
Best way I can describe it is that it smells like money. Seriously, the old style paper notes, imagine a fat roll of money and sniff it. Not the performance monster it was but still lasts for days on end on clothes. My uncle had had this as his signature scent for over 30 years.
