2 – If that isnt sufficient, I can get a rear groupset with a wider range cassette by either Eagle or Microshift that will fit my current hub. As I approach $200 am I getting close to other options that make more sense? Can I add a swap out a really low gear on giant mountain an existing cassette? Not sure if this is even possible, but trying to make this work with what I have. Microshift doesn’t show all of the Advent 8spd bits on their website, either. It’s worth noting that the 9spd derailleurs, anyway, come in 1x and 2x flavors.

Two things dominate the Talon’s ride character – its wheels and its frame. Smaller wheels fidget around the trail more than bigger 29ers. Combine that with a frame that’s all about efficient pedalling over rider comfort and you’ve got a recipe for a very talkative bike.
The 22/36 chainrings and the cassette give you a wider range of gears than you’d get on a 1x drivetrain. The biggest gear is bigger, the smallest gear is smaller, and you have better options in between. Another cost saving measure is the TRP hydraulic disc brakeset. On the trail it was hard to notice a difference in stopping power between these and the Shimano brakes found on the Trek Marlin 7, a very similar but slightly more expensive bike.
First thing I upgraded were the pedals as the stocks ones are plastic. These are actually lighter than the stock pedals even though they are metal. I also dumped the Suntour xcm forks even though they took the abuse I dished out. Bike feels much different now and definitely better on the trails with better response that inspires more confidence.
