I think the GTX 1650 Super will go up against the RX 5500, based on specs and early performance estimates, which again makes the GeForce GTX 1660 Super a bit of an oddity. Hopefully this comes as a surprise to no one, but the GTX 1660 Super ends up performing just a bit slower than the GTX 1660 Ti in pretty much every test I ran. Overall, the 1660 Super is 3-5 percent slower than the 1660 Ti, and it’s about percent faster than the vanilla GTX 1660.
The RX 590 and GTX 1660 were practically identical while the latter offered a 21% boost over the GTX GB’s minimum frame rate and 19% over the average frame rate. Still a popular free-to-play MMO, World of Tanks isn’t particularly taxing, but you still see big increases in frame rates with the new Core graphics engine as you rise up the GPU scale. At 1,920 x 1,080, the GTX 1060 has the measure of the RX 590 and adds 14% to the minimum and 10% to the average frame rates of the GTX GB. Clearly not a worthwhile upgrade – you’d need to step up to the GTX 1660 Ti for that. At 1440p, the GTX 1660 switched places with the RX 590, but was still getting on for 10% quicker than the GTX GB in maintaining a minimum frame rate of 67fps.
Stepping up to 2,560 x 1,440 and there’s very little difference between the RX 590 and GTX 1660, with just a small bump in the minimum frame rate for the Nvidia card. A minimum frame rate of 37fps is a great result here given this is a mid-range resolution at some fairly high settings in this game, although I’d be tempted to opt for the GTX 1660 Ti for a little more headroom. Once again, there’s a huge near 30% step up from the GTX GB, meaning that you’d probably consider the new card a worthwhile upgrade. The Turing architecture was introduced almost a year ago, and today the lineup has grown significantly larger than it was at launch. The GTX 1660 Super is undoubtedly a worthy successor to the original GTX 1660, which was a popular graphics card choice in many budget gaming setups. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER would be the latest addition to the Turing based GeForce 16 family.
This change significantly improves memory bandwidth from 192.1 GBps to 336 GBps and serves as the primary source of the performance improvement. Memory capacity remains the same at 6GB, which is plenty for 1080p gaming. Both new Super cards are based on the Turing architecture and gtx 1090 will use a variant of the TU116 silicon present in the 1660 and 1660 Ti. Like the other GTX Turing-based video cards, they do not include RTX support. The TU116 die is manufactured on the 12nm FFN process by TSMC, consists of 6.6 billion transistors, and measures in at 284 mm².
Turing shaders enable awesome performance increases on today’s games. Get 1.4X power efficiency over the previous generation for a faster, cooler, and quieter gaming experience. Finally, when it comes to performance, we have the 3DMark Firestrike Extreme score for the GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER at its stock clock speeds. Now based on this score and purely comparing it versus the GTX 1660 and GTX 1660 Ti, the GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER has around 95% performance of the Ti model while being around 6-8% faster than the non-SUPER GTX 1660. Now I believe this performance increase doesn’t justify an extra pricing but it would be a better decision to simply replace the GTX 1660 with the SUPER variant for the same price. EARLIER THIS YEAR, Nvidia launched its new GTX 16-series with the GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1660, and GTX 1650 seeking to join the ranks of the best graphics cards. The lack of ray-tracing hardware is interesting after last year’s RTX 20-series, but it makes sense for the mid-range and lower markets. You no longer need an Nvidia RTX card to try out some of the company’s RTX features, including DirectX Raytracing. Anyone with a GTX GB or better can now turn on DXR in any game that supports it. Nvidia has finally demonstrated how well ray tracing would work on its GTX 10 and 16 series GPUs.
As expected, the performance uplift isn’t universal, but we saw enough gains for this new GPU to get the ‘Super’ moniker. At the intended $230 MSRP, the gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb would cost just 2% more per frame than the RX 590 and that makes it the better choice given the greatly reduced power consumption. At $240 it may still be the right choice for most, but anything more than that and you could argue strongly for the RX 590 at $200.
