And with its performance and durability, this watch, just like the other G-Shock watches, is incredibly durable. While not something you’d wear as a dress piece (unless you’re being willfully transgressive, which I’m on board for) the case has an undeniable ability to slide gracefully under a shirt cuff. While this is a full featured G-Shock with timers, alarms, multiple g shock watch time zones, and so forth, that, to me, isn’t what this watch is all about. This is not a tactical watch and I’m not recommending it as a tool, I’m recommending it solely and exclusively as a design object. When shopping for bang for buck EDC watches, very specific brands and models come to mind. And at the very top of the list is the humble Casio G-Shock.
In daylight the dial reflects light from different facets of the multilayer structure, while at night things get a little harder to read. The shapes along the way play with whatever light g shock protection managed to enter the watch and again just looks amazing. Starting with the bezel and we’re off to the best possible start. The octagon is a classic shape that works so well on a watch.
Its face features large indices and contrasting hands, while its date complication is represented with a subdial at the 9 o’clock position rather than as part of its digital display. Said display is in a sleeker angled window at the 4 o’clock position. Another upgrade the GA-2100 gets is a dual LED system, one that lights up the lumed hands , and a backlight for the digital display window.
watches, many of which, to me, appear simply clownlike when worn out in the real world. Also, it’s great to see an actually legible analog dial, unlike some with so much clutter on the dial it’s nearly impossible to discern the actual time. Lume the hour markers as well as the hands or make the LED cast better light across the hands too. The full watch and strap is matt black or dark grey depending on the light hitting it.
The second, and larger problem, is that the screen is virtually impossible to read without the backlight, unless the dial happens to be completely bathed in direct sunlight. This watch can be had for $100 from a certain large online retailer. It has an octagonal case shape, not unlike a certain Holy Trinity brand’s famed sports watch, and it’s bright red. If you wear this watch out in a public place, someone is going to comment on the fact that it’s red. You’ll notice people’s eyes gazing at it awkwardly, probably assuming it’s a new smart watch, or maybe assuming that you’re Meek Mill. For me, this is the appeal of my bright red G-Shock GA-2100.
An auto-LED light also provides great legibility to the analogue-digital dial and LCD display. The resin band combined with 200-metre depth rating makes the GA-2100 the go-to piece come rain or shine. Features such as time zone settings, stopwatch function, countdown timers and alarms provide versatility and unbeatable utility. (The GA A and GA A also have Neo-Brite luminous hands.) The dimensions are 48.5 x 45.4 x 11.8 millimeters and the weight is 51 grams. Moreover, the super illuminator double LED light makes readability clearer and more visible even in tough environments. One LED for the face and one backlight for the digital display.

Tastes will obviously differ, but there’s something fun and vibrant about the red that doesn’t come through in the black. The use of the Carbon Core Guard structure allows the GA-2100 to be the slimmest G-Shock of all current models. The height and width of the watch is considered mid-size, rather than the large size of most analog G-Shock watches, and the watch wears very light and comfortably. The GA-2100 is currently the lightest analog-digital G-Shock model at 51 grams.
