This is great if you want to keep your food quite cold but don’t want to worry about accidentally freezing it. It’s got slightly thinner walls than most other coolers on my list but still does a good job getting the temp down to an acceptable level. 24L isn’t big enough to hold more than a day or two’s worth of food for one to two people. It’s capable of lowering the internal temperature by 40 °F, allowing it to keep your food at a safe temperature in rooms with an ambient temp around 80 °F. It provides just enough space for 3-5 days worth of groceries for 2-3 days for a couple. To start with, it ties for the largest cooler on the list, just edging out the top-ranked Dometic TC35.
This type of approach means that you can enjoy an extended cooling performance that a traditional cooler can’t match. That’s a pretty big detriment for anyone hoping to achieve USDA food-safe temperatures if it’s warmer than 76º F outside. That fairly major flaw notwithstanding, the Igloo does have a decently large capacity of 60 cans — and beers or sodas don’t need to be 40º F. The Igloo is also one of the only coolers we tested that comes with a fuse replacement, which is handy.
If you’re okay with making more frequent grocery runs or if you only need a restricted refrigerated space, this can be a good option. It wasn’t super noticeable most of the time, but became a lot more so during a quiet night, especially in a small space like an off-grid tiny home. This helps reduce overall power draw to save you money and keep your food at the proper temperatures.
The Gear Team has tested a wide variety of automotive products, parts, accessories, and gear, such as GPS trackers for cars, OBD2 scanners, and electric car chargers. In balance, the Coleman Powerchill offers a good value for your money, with decent performance and relatively large capacity. The only real things to worry about are its higher power draw and louder fan. You can open up this cooler from the right or the left when in upright mode. If you’ve got a very compact space, like in a tiny house, this offers a lot of flexibility in where you put it.
It reached the coldest temps in our test (see graph below) by a good margin. It’s extremely well built, featuring spring-loaded handles, an easy-to-use interface, and a sturdy hinge. And just as it states helpfully on a sticker on the lid, it won’t really cool contents from room temperature — you need to pre-chill them before using the cooler. This is also the only thermoelectric cooler we tested that doesn’t also have a heating function. A detail that we found odd, as thermoelectric coolers work by pumping hot air from one side to the other and so, therefore, are easy to reverse the direction that hot air is flowing. If you are spending your days hiking around, you can’t have a cooler that relies on a stable and stationary power source.
This way, your portable cooler is maintaining a cold temperature, which is far more efficient and uses less power than cooling down items. If you’re looking for a larger thermoelectric cooler, this one from Coleman worked really well. It’s about a third larger than the Igloo for just a bit more money. Better yet, it can be stored with the lid up (like in the photo) or on its side with the lid facing out, like a mini-fridge.
