Normally you’d see higher-spec video RAM tied to a faster GPU, so you’d be left a little unsure as to whether the performance hikes you were seeing were down to the improved graphics silicon or if it was down to the memory. As we’ve said, the actual GPU at the heart of the GTX 1660 Super hasn’t changed from the standard GTX 1660. It’s the exact same TU116 GPU, with 22 streaming multiprocessors and 1,408 CUDA cores. It’s even running at the same base and boost clock frequencies too. So the only thing that’s giving it the serious performance uplift shown by our benchmarking tests is that boosted video memory subsystem.

There were even a few titles such as The Witcher 3, For Honor and Monster Hunter World which saw gains in the 18 to 25% range. For a mere $10 extra over the base 1660, we see this gtx 1090 as a worthwhile update. We see another solid performance uplift, this time when testing with Battlefield V. A 13% increase over the base model is the best result we’ve seen yet.

This gives the gtx 1080 8gb 336GB/sec of memory bandwidth, 75% more bandwidth than the original GTX 1660, or as much as the RTX 2060. And this extensive amount of bandwidth is almost entirely responsible for the 12% performance gains we see over the original card. The one thing that is clear, however, is that this may as well be a de facto price cut for NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. When NVIDIA went about cutting down the GTX 1660 Ti to create the original GTX 1660, the single biggest change there was swapping out GDDR6 for cheaper GDDR5.

I recommend gamers first decide what resolution and settings they want to use, and what level of performance they want. Then look at the cards that meet those targets and only then do the value charts become more useful. Because even though the RX 570 looks like great value, personally I want something that can handle at least 1440p and high to ultra settings. This EVGA is a pretty standard design, with dual cooling fans and a modest heatsink. With a rated TDP of 125W, there’s no real need for an extravagant cooling solution, and jacking up the price runs counter to the whole concept of a mid-range offering.

The EVGA GTX 1660 Super is a great GPU that offers excellent performance, quiet operation, and a nominal price tag. Can play games like Modern Warfare and Overwatch at high video settings with 60 FPS, no issues.

Now that they’ve effectively undone this – and then some – most of the performance that NVIDIA shaved off for the GTX 1660 has come back in the lower-priced Super card. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a TH graphics card review that had such few cards being compared. Leaving out the 1660 non-super seems odd, as does the lack of RX 590 .

Resident Evil 2 shows almost no performance uplift for the 1660 Super over the standard 1660, just a ~2% increase for the average frame rate. In other words, it’s the exact same 12nm 284mm2 die comprised of 6.6 billion transistors. It also has a 6GB VRAM buffer, but it’s here gtx 1080 8gb where the changes have been made.
