Anyway, let’s take a look at the specifications, what’s changed and just how fast the RTX 2070 Super is. Today I’ll be pitching Nvidia’s latest pair of RTX mid-range graphics cards against their predecessors to see just how fast these new tweaked kids on the block are – namely the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2070 Super. You’d be right in thinking the RTX series hasn’t been around long, yet less than 12 months on, Nvidia has ousted a whole new range of graphics cards – the RTX Super series. Nvidia’s latest graphics cards have featured surprising performance in 4K gaming, but we weren’t expecting the Nvidia RTX 2070 to deliver here. As I simply can’t imagine a TU104 card matching RTX 2080 Ti, it would seem that NVIDIA’s energy efficiency is going to take a hit here. NVIDIA’s high clocks here mean that they have to really open up on power delivery in order to allow the TU104 GPU to sustain over 1800MHz, which comes at a fairly expensive point on the voltage/frequency curve.

You can, at least, get away with a 550W power supply this time, though, unlike the RTX 2080 siblings which recommend 650W. Finally, power consumption was around 10W more under load for the system as a whole with the RTX 2070 Super, which is maybe a little less than I was expecting and may well be more in other tests than the 3D Mark Port Royal I used here. There’s a slight downgrade, though, which is power consumption, which rises from 175W with the RTX 2070 to 215W with the new Super model. With our GeForce RTX 2070 test bench, we were able to play Strange Brigade and Forza Horizon 4 at a respectable 70 fps to 60 fps, respectively.

All that extra hardware demands more power, with the reference RTX 2070 requiring 25 more watts than its predecessor, and the Founders Edition demanding 10 more than that, at 185W. That power flows to the Founders Edition via a single eight-pin connector at the very end of card, rather than the usual edge placement. I usually loathe that configuration, but it works here, mostly because the Nvidia RTX 2070 Founders Edition is so tiny.
Meanwhile, coming in below the Super at the new price tier of $399 is the RTX 2060 Super. This is a card that is for all intents and purposes a RTX 2070 at a lower price; it uses an ever-so-slightly cut-down version of TU106 to deliver performance that is within 1% of the RTX 2070. All told, NVIDIA has done something fairly similar here as with the RTX 2070 Super, disabling some SMs and cranking up the clockspeeds to compensate. The end result is a card with 34 of 36 SMs enabled, and some extra clocks to help minimize the gap. By the numbers it delivers 96% of RTX 2070’s shading/texturing/geometry performance, but 102% of its ROP/rasterization performance.
There were again some sizeable gains against the old RTX card of 22% at 1080p, 23% at 1440p and 20% at 4K, although bear in mind that RTX 2070 result is from a stock card – not a Founders Edition. Even so, it was a win over the GTX 1080 Ti here – so Nvidia’s claims are in part true, although not across the board. To start with we should look at pricing and as far as the RTX 2070 Super goes, things aren’t too bad. We’re looking at an MSRP of $499 (£475 in the UK), while the cheapest RTX 2070’s I could find were around the $479 (£479) mark.
Next up is the area in which dominates and removes all doubt about which card is better. They both use GDDR6 which was the standard at the time of their release, but the advantages in size, bandwidth and bus width make RTX 2070 a far better choice for stuff like 4K gaming and video editing. If every other metric in this RTX 2060 vs RTX 2070 comparison was level, then 2060’s boost clock might be advantageous, but that’s simply not the case.
