Three Shades Of Casioak
As I mentioned previously, the time may be difficult to read at night using the analog hands, but the digital display solves this problem. A small light can be activated that perfectly illuminates the digital display and provides enough light to adequately read the time using the handset. Another day, another Casioak, and back to the jelly goodness of the GA-2100SKE-7AER. It’s remarkable how these references, while identical, change personality with both context and activity, and what better sports watch than a G-Shock if, like me, you don’t fancy a huge Garmin.
They call it Carbon Core Guard structure because it is so light and strong. The whole watch comes in at just over 50 grams, which is insane for a watch. These G-Shock watches also come in a range of eye-catching colors from the all-black model shown above, to bright red, black with green and red accents, black with bright purple and a whole lot more. Light, comfortable, very high eye appeal for the money, main hands surprisingly readable, other features not so much and I like how it doesn’t scream G Shock in design, size and case wording. Introducing new Utility Color additions to GA-2100 thin, analog-digital combination line up from G-Shock, the watch brand that is constantly setting new standards for unmatched timekeeping toughness. This new model combine practical and utilitarian colors of the bezels, faces, and bands that go well with street fashions, to create distinctive looks that fit right in with a wide range of fashions and activities.
On the surface this seems like an odd inclusion, but it solves 2 problems. It keeps the dial somewhat symmetrical; if you try to imagine the dial without it there, it would look odd. It also keeps the digital display compact and unobtrusive. While the handset is bright white g shock protection and filled with lume, the markers are off-white, almost gray. They match the color of the lume on the hands but are not lumed at all. I would have liked to see Casio lume the markers as it can be difficult to read and orient yourself when reading the time in the dark.
It’s so small that Casio used a trick by tapping the “C & B” buttons to temporarily rotate the hands out of the way. A new carbon core guard structure protects the module by enclosing it in a carbon case. The case is made of fine resin embedded with carbon fibers for outstanding strength, crack resistance, and durability. It has an impressive feature set, is tough and durable, has a 200-meter water resistance rating, and is comfortable on a variety of wrist sizes. It is one of the few models the brand offers that can adapt to a variety of situations. If you can do without radio sync and Bluetooth, this is the G-Shock to buy.
The G-Shock GA-2100 has in-built world timer with 31 time zones, 1/100 second stopwatch, countdown timer with measuring unit 1 second and with a countdown range for up to 24 hours. The new GA-2100 model getand updated octagon form that was also employed for the original DW-5000C. Analog-digital timekeeping comes packed into a no-nonsense simple design without sacrificing the G-SHOCK level toughness. High-strength resin material, which is reinforced with carbon fibers, makes it possible to create a case that is a mere 11.8 mm thin, which is the thinnest among G-SHOCK combination models yet. At 9 o’clock, it also has an analog day display that displays the day of the week.
I admit it is no match to the G-Shock ‘origin’ (GMW-B5000) but still it is classy and powerful. It gives a good feel on hands, and g shock watch not like the other G-shock’s that feel bulky on hands. The strap is really of high-quality rubber and it gives a premium look.
In traditional G-Shock fashion, the watch has text printed on the bezel in order to help you know which functions are for what. At 12 o’clock, we have the text ”G-Shock”, at 6 o’clock the text ”Protection”. The four other texts refer to the functions of the buttons which are placed just to the side of it, which is of course helpful when you are operating it.
An auto-LED light also provides great legibility to the analogue-digital dial and LCD display. The resin band combined with 200-metre depth rating makes the GA-2100 the go-to piece come rain or shine. Features such as time zone settings, stopwatch function, countdown timers and alarms provide versatility and unbeatable utility. (The GA A and GA A also have Neo-Brite luminous hands.) The dimensions are 48.5 x 45.4 x 11.8 millimeters and the weight is 51 grams. Moreover, the super illuminator double LED light makes readability clearer and more visible even in tough environments. One LED for the face and one backlight for the digital display.
And with its performance and durability, this watch, just like the other G-Shock watches, is incredibly durable. While not something you’d wear as a dress piece (unless you’re being willfully transgressive, which I’m on board for) the case has an undeniable ability to slide gracefully under a shirt cuff. While this is a full featured G-Shock with timers, alarms, multiple time zones, and so forth, that, to me, isn’t what this watch is all about. This is not a tactical watch and I’m not recommending it as a tool, I’m recommending it solely and exclusively as a design object. When shopping for bang for buck EDC watches, very specific brands and models come to mind. And at the very top of the list is the humble Casio G-Shock.
