Dewalt Planer Trouble

Bench-top thickness planers have a dial used to move the cutting heads up and down to set the depth of cut. On each model the dial indicates how far the heads move up and down per revolution of the dial. We used calipers to measure the average thickness of each wood sample before and after a pass to remove 3/32″. We then compared how accurately each planer was able to do that and listed the average deviation from the 3/32″.

It is engineered more like a stationary planer, built around four threaded rods over which the head moves up and down. Based on the specifications, the DW733 and DW734 don’t seem to differ that much from the DW735. They have about the same capacity, the same power, and are only slightly lighter than the DW735. The only significant difference is that the DW733 has two resharpenable blades, while the DW734 has three, two-sided, disposable blades. With a dust assisted dust ejection and dust port, you can easily handle and contain all the dust produced while working with the planer.

Actually got this, and a bench top drill press and made $100. A big draw for me was that there are no worries about sharpening or replacing knives – just rotate individual cutterhead. The Shelix cutterhead is a premium 3rd party upgrade. It’s completely optional, and the added cost seems inline with dewalt tools how much it costs to step up from plain knives to helical-style insert cutters in larger woodworking machines. The potential benefits of a Shelix head include 1) reduced snipe tear-out, especially in figured woods, 2) longer-lasting sharpness, 3) easier cutting edge rotation and replacement.

It chews through a full 13” wide slab with relative ease. You can hear the motor change pitch when it is faced with a wide slab but it’s never bogged down on me. The most common topic I get asked questions about is tools.
