Ever since Computex, NVIDIA has been teasing a “Super” announcement of their own. NVIDIA is launching a mid-generation kicker for their mid-to-high-end video card lineup in the form of their GeForce RTX 20 series Super cards. Based on the same family of Turing GPUs as the original GeForce RTX 20 series cards, these new Super cards – all suffixed Super, appropriately enough – come with new configurations and new clockspeeds. They are, essentially, NVIDIA’s 2019 card family for the $399+ video card market.
An additional benefit of G-SYNC is reduced lag so gamers will benefit from the improved command response time as well. Of course, Zotac’s AMP Extreme card still has the same 2034 CUDA cores as every other RTX 2070 card on the planet, as well as an identical 8GB of GDDR6 memory and base clock speed of 1410MHz. The main difference is in its boost clock speed, which Zotac has factory overclocked from Nvidia’s reference specification of 1620MHz all the way up to 1860MHz. For reference, even Nvidia’s own Founders Edition of the RTX 2070 only goes up to a maximum of 1710MHz.
The Super spits out boots of up to 1770MHz, and comes packing 40 streaming multiprocessors, each with 1 RT core, 8 Tensor cores, 64 CUDA cores and 4 Texture units—essentially it’s a trimmed down version of the RTX 2080. Everything is super with the all-new ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 20 Series SUPER graphics cards. Based on the NVIDIA Turing architecture, it’s packed with more cores and ultra-fast GDDR6 memory. As with all games and tests, I’d expect both AMD and Nvidia’s cards to perform better over time once titles are optimized and drivers are tweaked and improved. Even without that, the performance gap in the midrange has definitely shrunk, thanks to AMD’s new cards, though. That 8GB of VRAM is the same amount found on both the RTX 2060 Super and gtx 1080 8gb Super. Nvidia has done very little in terms of hardware to its upgraded RTX Super cards, but there are now more raw CUDA cores and higher clock speeds.
But the clocks used are basically what every 1080 can do in its sleep when overclocked. Overclocking results on the 2070 super put it only up to the 1080 stock due to the lower headroom available. The 1080 super will fair even worse having gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb basically the same amount of cores as the 1080. PNY are considered to be one of the budget aftermarket brands which have really come out of the woodwork these last few years producing quality products at very affordable prices.
Where RTX 2070 shows more of its shine is in the number of ROPs and in the number of ray tracing cores. Both of these are directly responsible for a better output, and when all of these little benefits are put together, there’s a clear advantage. However, things are harder to miss at the number of texture mapping units. Although RTX 2070 comes off stronger, it’s very important to note that even their score of 144 is not on the level of many other cards in the same price range. RTX 2060 ranks the lowest in this category in their tier in our GPU hierarchy and is a lot closer to the tier below. The new GeForce RTX SUPER Series has even more cores and higher clocks for superfast performance compared to previous-generation GPUs.
As graphics card launches go, it’s probably fair to say the new RTX cards have had a pretty terrible one so far. Just like the xx70 cards before it, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 stands firmly in that middle ground to give you quite a bit of performance for a bit less than the price of Nvidia’s flagship. It splits the difference between value and performance in the Turing series of graphics cards. So, while the GeForce RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti both deliver outstanding performance, it’s the RTX 2070 that delivers more value to most consumers.
