Razor launches a seated cargo scooter for adults
While many of the companies from that era have gone bust, Razor is still around, and has revisited its original design for the electric scooter era. As perhaps the most prolific reviewer of e-bikes and e-scooters on the internet, I’m a rare breed of being a professional rider of weird little EVs. And so, while there were some faults with the Razor EcoSmart Cargo, I could ride it just fine and get by. Let’s start with the Razor EcoSmart Cargo’s central motor. Despite proving to be a powerful and torquey setup with 1,000W of power, it sounds like a chain saw coming down the road. This is the loudest electric scooter motor I think I’ve ever heard.

The small LED screen isn’t fancy but gives you a good readout of your razor scooter speed and battery life. There are three speed modes, though I never used anything but the highest speed mode. And the motor braking in the rear wheel is surprisingly powerful.
Each week, I get pitches on scooters that can hit top speeds of 30, 40, even 50 mph, with jumbo battery packs and dual motors to boot. But it’s also the case that many of these high-powered two-wheelers retail for well over $1,000. That’s more than most people are probably willing to spend on an electric scooter. At 26.5 pounds, the Razor Icon is the same weight as the Unagi Model One and GoTrax GXL V2. It’s about as light as you’re going to get without venturing into the best electric scooters for kids, but for smaller individuals. I was able to carry it up the steps of a train and through Penn Station without too much difficulty, though you’ll get an arm workout. Razor’s tiny, folding metal two-wheelers made kick scooters trendy once upon a time, before scooter sharing and battery and motor technology turned scooters into serious vehicles. Scooters are used to get around quickly, either recreationally or while running errands. There are Razor scooters for people of all sizes, ages, and athletic abilities.
The Icon got me around pretty easily, both in my neighborhood and up and down the avenues in New York City. It has a nice, smooth pickup, and its motor was strong enough to get me up my test hill (and its 6% grade) at around 5-6 MPH. That’s on the slow side, but typical for a motor with this output. On razor electric scooter level terrain, I was able to easily hit the scooter’s max speed of 18 MPH. The Razor Icon is its aptly named successor, adding a motor but keeping the same overall look. Beneath the exterior, though, is a great midrange scooter that’s affordably priced, with good range and a suitably strong motor.
But scooters have come a long way since the 90s when Razors first became popular. And electric scooters have especially evolved in the last few years. Maybe it just feels so strong because the scooter is quite light (26.5 pounds!) and so you expect it to be a weak little thing. Whatever the reason, the scooter really picks up and moves. I wouldn’t want to hit any brick pavers or Zeus-forbid any cobblestone streets, but the wheels feel just fine on smooth bike paths and decent-quality roads. The shiny aluminum deck, colorful wheels, minimalist razor scooter foot brake, and folding stem all harken back to the scooting days of yesteryear. Razer says that the Icon’s 36V battery is good for about 18 miles of range under ideal circumstances; I came closer to 10 in my riding, which included a number of hills. Just above the front wheel is a small triangular cutout through which you can conceivably thread a bike lock, but it’s a pretty small opening.
Additionally, these scooters are made with higher quality parts and materials and have better warranty coverage. Their prices are competitive with Razor’s kids scooters, or even better, and their quality and coverage are superior. Furthermore, Razor Scooters sparked a wave of innovation in the personal transportation industry.
Their success paved the way for developing other compact and portable modes of transportation, such as electric skateboards and hoverboards. The concept of lightweight, foldable, and convenient transportation options owes a debt of gratitude to the pioneering spirit of Razor Scooters. The other challenge had to do with the public’s safety concerns regarding the scooters. People felt like they were constantly dodging Razor scooters on the streets. To make matters worse, the targeted age group (pre-teens) was often seen as reckless and irresponsible, further fueling the skepticism. Carlton, in 1999, through the JD Corporation, began working on his design of the first Razor scooter.
