iRobot Roomba Combo: vacuum cleaner and floor scrubber robot

A horizontally mounted “side spinner” brush on the right side of the unit sweeps against walls to reach debris not accessible by the main brushes and vacuum. In the first generation, the dirty air passes through the fan before reaching the filter, while later models use a fan-bypass vacuum. However, during review we challenged it a bit too far with a red sauce spill and flour on hard flooring which it didn’t cope well with. It’s also really, really loud when emptying and although the suction was pretty mega, our reviewer felt that the L10s Ultra is better suited to the hard floors since not all crumbs were lifted from deep-pile rugs.

“These models can still provide efficient cleaning performance without the added connectivity options,” she says. Like with all devices powered by battery, you’ll want to consider how long the battery lasts and how long it takes to charge. If you live in a small space, your robot vacuum’s battery will likely last long enough to clean the whole place on a bissell crosswave cordless single charge. In larger homes, the robot vacuum might need to pause and recharge before finishing up the task. Although this robot vacuum doesn’t come with a remote, we loved that there is just one button to start and stop the vacuum. You can download the app to control it from there, which allows you to take advantage of some of the fancier features.

The debris is captured in a 14.9oz / 440ml replaceable dust bag in the charging and emptying station. This makes it an awesome choice for those who suffer from allergies because all the dust is contained, and there is no fear of emptying any of it back out again (by accident) bissell crosswave cordless if you open it. Alerts when the bag needs a change and integration with Alexa and Google Assistant are a sweetener to an already excellent robot vacuum. More advanced robot vacuums have lasers on the front of the machine and some on the underside of the device too.

You can then label rooms and tell the vac to clean specific areas (or avoid ones that are particularly cluttered). We’ve concluded that the Roborock Q5’s smart mapping works better, but this new addition to the i4 EVO makes it slightly smarter than it was previously. However, we don’t think chasing the very best cleaning performance is worthwhile. Bots work on almost any kind of bare flooring and on most shark cordless kinds of carpets and rugs—though there are some exceptions, such as high-pile rugs and some very dark flooring (which can impede the bots’ infrared sensors). Bots can reliably pick up most kinds of common floor debris, including hair, crumbs, dust, and cat litter. To find the best robot vacuums for carpets, we tested 50 models in our Lab before sending them home with our testers for at-home use.

However, the s9+ was better at picking up pet hair (98% vs 90.5% collected on average), so each comes with its strengths and weaknesses. This model is a step up from the Roomba i7+, but know that means it comes at a cost. This is an expensive Roomba, but if you’re a pet owner with a puppy or elderly dog prone to accidents, it could be worth the price. Just be prepared for the louder operation of this vacuum, especially when it empties, which may be hard to talk over or disturb your sleeping pup or cat on the couch. Stark’s Vacuums has grown to be one of the largest independent vacuum cleaner retailers in the country, with nine locations and more than 250 vacuums to choose from. Parts of some models are interchangeable, allowing owners to mix and match features, or switch to other units for longer battery operation.

IRobot’s Roomba j7 is the best of the best, offering excellent cleaning power, an impressive app, plenty of extra features, easy repairability, and a stylish design for around $600. If you have pets, children, or just lots of foot traffic and find it hard to keep up with your floors, this will do the dirty work for you. IRobot vacuums tend to target a higher price niche than eufy models, reflected in their superior cleaning performance, wider array of features, and sturdier build quality. We tested the claim out with a fake turd made from Nutella and oatmeal, and the j7 worked great. The j7 spotted the faux feces from a few feet away (the LED ring on the bot flashes blue for a second when it perceives an obstacle) and then methodically worked around the mess, never getting closer than about a foot. It also did a good job of staying away from a power strip, a power cord, and a USB cable.
