Every year, thousands of new campers get their first taste of the outdoors in an Ozark Trail tent. Their combination of space and affordability catches the eye of many campers, but the details on these shelters can be lacking. If you’re considering an Ozark Trail yourself, you’re in the right place.
It’s common to troubleshoot positioning in windy conditions, but neither the Mineral King 3 nor any straight-poled dome tent we tested collapsed in this way. Once we Velcroed the poles to the fly via the tabs that run under the seams, the poles stabilized. And with some added staked lines, the tent was as sturdy as any we observed. But under windy conditions, you’ll want to reinforce the poles with all available mechanisms and not cut any corners in setup. Also, like the Mineral King, this tent is short on stakes.
This means that on a hot night, you can leave the main entrance open with the bug netting closed to let air in and out. This tent seems to be built with winter in mind and has excellent insulative properties for a single-layer ozark trail wall tent tent. The material is made from 100% army DYNADUCK cotton that has a high-density weave that is highly resistant to mildew and has a treatment that swells when wet so that it remains waterproof for many years.
It requires you to ensure it is completely dry before storing, but if cared for properly, it will last a lifetime. One thing we did find a little strange was the lack of ventilation other than the main entrance. There are no ventilation holes, and the windows have a fixed transparent polyvinyl layer that lets light in but doesn’t open up to improve airflow. However, after spending 20 hours researching this guide, we discovered that this is relatively normal for canvas wall tents. The other changes REI made in the 2018 models of both Base Camp tents include the addition of a low side vent and more stuff pockets on the walls and ceiling. Also, those walls are now made of polyester instead of nylon—we’ll monitor them in long-term testing to see how they wear.
The frame (sold separately) is all color-coded for fast and easy setup and is well worth getting at the time of purchase along with the floor. The Guide Gear 10 x 12′ Canvas Wall Tent is one of the best canvas tents with straight walls. You need to be aware that when you buy this tent, you will need to purchase the poles and floor separately from here and here. The tent is extremely comfortable inside with a thick rubberized PVC floor that you can walk on with your boots and not worry too much. You get a nice high door so you can walk right in, and there is bug netting so that you can leave the door open without becoming a victim to mosquitos and gnats.
Our favorite Ozark Trail tent currently is the Ozark Trail Three Room Instant Cabin. This tent’s combination of floor space, livability, and value make it a home run for large groups or families looking to spread out in style, but this 12-person behemoth won’t be everyone’s first choice. The poles are a combination of steel used for the legs and fiberglass used for the roof. The poles attach to the tent with clips, sleeves on the roof, and pin and ring connectors on the base. With so much mesh on the ceiling, I would not camp with this tent in a cold environment.
