This camping tent is designed with the WeatherTec system that features patented welded floors and inverted seams to help ensure you stay dry if it starts to rain. An integrated vented rainfly offers added protection from the rain and improves airflow without the need for extra assembly. This backpacking tent is made from rugged Polyguard 2X double-thick fabric that stands up to the rigors of the outdoors, so you can use it reliably season after season.
She points out that, when shopping for tents, you will absolutely get what you pay for. Higher-quality tents will have seams already sealed to protect from rain. They will also have a rainfly, which helps when you experience unexpected bouts of rain. She also suggests looking for a family tent that offers good internal storage, like pockets and ceiling loops for water bottles, lanterns and the like.
The Base Camp also offers more privacy compared with our other picks—with or without the rain fly. If head space is a priority, REI’s Kingdom tent line is an option worth considering for family camping trips. The 6-person tent has a peak height reaching 75 inches, providing enough room for most people to comfortably stand in, while its 83-square-foot floor coleman cabin tent area can fit an air mattress and luggage. It also includes a zippered divider in the center to create two separate rooms for privacy, and has two doors for easy access through the front and the back of the tent. In addition to the 6-person Kingdom tent, REI offers a 4-person option and an 8-person option, which is recommended for larger families.

The screened-in porch lets you enjoy the fresh air with friends and family away from the bugs and keeps dirt from getting tracked in. Plus, you’ll have more freedom to stand upright and move around thanks to the cabin frame’s extra-high ceiling and vertical walls. Stay dry all night long with the detachable rainfly and WeatherTec™ system that features a tub-like floor, patented welded corners, and inverted seams. A 4-person tent and tents with enclosed porches are also available. The best-selling Coleman Sundome 6-Person Tent has a footprint larger (100 square feet) than that of our top-pick tent for families, but it felt smaller because it has a lower ceiling, no vestibule, and only one door.
The door only opens halfway, a disappointing feature found in other Coleman tents. Throughout all our testing, we wanted to know how it felt to be inside the tents for long periods of time. If we had to spend a day in the tent during a storm, would it be comfortable? After first removing the models that failed the structural tests, we slept, watched the stars, and ate our meals in all of the tents, as well as planned hikes from them.
If the tent you buy doesn’t come with a footprint (two of our recommended tents, the Mountain Hardwear Mineral King 3 and the Marmot Tungsten 4, do), we recommend purchasing a companion footprint, if one is available. A footprint doesn’t take up much space, is relatively inexpensive, and is much easier to repair or replace than a tent bottom coleman sleeping bags if it tears. This lightweight option by Marmot is a 2-person backpacking tent, complete with an interior mesh wall for a bug-free and well-ventilated enclosure. It comes with a durable polyester rainfly, which is an outermost layer of fabric that protects the tent from rain and condensation, and includes vents for a breathable living space.
For hot day ventilation, I would say that Coleman and CORE tents are on par with each other. These tub floors extend up the sides of the tent, so if your tent is sitting in a few inches of water, the tub floor will help to minimize leaking into the tent. My Coleman tents have at least a few inches of tub flooring, my WeatherMaster with about 7 and a half inches, and my 10-Person Instant Cabin Tent with 4 inches. Also, I found that the corners of the floorings, which are stated to be “welded”, are also not taped, and both tents also started leaking here. Basically, I think that Coleman and CORE tents have the same amount of waterproofing.
And you can unzip the front door, remove it, and neatly stash it into one of the tent’s internal pockets—a useful feature if you’re feeling sociable. Its walls are 75-denier polyester fabric (tougher than the Wireless 6’s 68-denier polyester and the same as the REI Co-op Base Camp’s) that extends about two-thirds up the tent’s sides, and then is topped with mesh. The partial fly does a great job of keeping rain out of the upper, mesh areas, and cleverly placed vents maintain airflow so it never feels too stuffy. Like most dome-style tents, the Wireless 6 withstands wind like a champ—it fared noticeably better than the Camp Creek 6 in 15-mph gusts. The continuous curve of the dome shape allows for wind to pass over and around it. You can also get a nice cross breeze going by leaving the vestibules open.
We help people make fun memories by providing the tents, lighting, stoves, coolers, sleeping bags, and camping tools integral to their favorite outdoor experiences. On rainy nights, stay dry thanks to tub-like floors with patented corner welds and covered seams to help keep water out. This is formally a 2-room structure with a removable divider, and there are two doors that can be used by the occupants in these two rooms. The frame is all steel so this is a good side of this tent, only the hinged door poles are flexible fiberglass. The tent is also fully freestanding, so this is indeed very convenient because you can have it pitched on any surface, no matter if this is concrete or grass, sand or rock, indoor or outdoor.
