W. Schwinn returned to Chicago and in 1933 introduced the Schwinn B-10E Motorbike, actually a youth’s bicycle designed to imitate a motorcycle. Much of how smoothly an indoor-cycling bike rides has to do with its flywheel—the main wheel that powers the bike. Flywheel positioning can be either in the front of the bike or in the back of the bike (we’ve ridden on both styles). We took into account the weight of the flywheel, knowing that a heavier wheel theoretically results in a better ride.
Schwinn sold an impressive 1.5 million bicycles in 1974, but would pay the price for failing to keep up with new developments in bicycle technology and buying trends. As a result, Schwinns became increasingly dated in both styling and technology. By 1957, the Paramount series, once a premier racing bicycle, had atrophied from a lack of attention and modernization.
The bike accommodates riders with inseams between 28 inches and 38 inches. (Inseam—a measure of inner-leg length, typically from crotch to ankle—is an unconventional way to present suggested height parameters.) The maximum rider weight is 300 pounds. The adjustment process isn’t as elegant as on some of our other picks; there are no holes in the handlebar or seat posts to definitely lock into a spot.
(Peloton’s warranty, by comparison, only covers five years for the frame and one year for the parts.) With the IC4, you can add an additional five years to the parts and labor warranty with the Schwinn Protection Plan for an extra $109. Complementing the sweet ride is front and rear suspension from the fork and seatpost. The 3-speed drivetrain is housed internally in the rear hub, so it’s sealed from the elements for low maintenance and it shifts even when you’re standing still. Plus, you also get easy-rolling 700c wheels and powerful linear-pull brakes.
We have spent over a century building the bicycle industry into what it is today, and we’re not done yet. At this time, very few of the bicycles being produced by Giant bore their own brand name. In a bid to rectify this Tony Lo – one of King Liu’s business partners – began a campaign for brand recognition. In 1986 the Giant Bikes branded bicycles were introduced into the European marketplace. In our tests, adjusting the seat and handlebars took more effort on the Aero Connected Spinner Bike than on some of the other bikes we tried, as the slide adjusters felt sticky.
The company began operations in a factory at the northwest corner of Peoria and Lake Streets in Chicago. With the collapse of the bicycle market around the turn of the century, the company purchased March-Davis, a competitor schwinn cruiser bike which was operating on what was then the city’s far west side, and moved operations there. In 1895, Schwinn was driven by the pursuit of an American dream when bicycling was still a relatively new sport.
