We started Rascal Rides when Parker was born and we didn’t want to give up our passion for biking. Over the years, we’ve tested hundreds of kids bikes, helmets, bike trailers, and more. Just because you think your child probably needs a 14″ bike doesn’t mean that ANY 14″ bike will fit them.
For kids race BMX bikes, the wheel size is always 20 inches–even for really tiny riders. DO NOT buy a bike that has a minimum seatpost height any higher than 1-3″ longer than your child’s inseam. They will not be able to touch the dynacraft klds-on toys ground, will struggle to reach the pedals, and are probably going to struggle or get hurt. With a wide range of bikes, from mountain bikes to road bikes, they also offer a variety of accessories, such as bike racks and helmets.
After about a week emailing back and forth I was asked if I had a multimeter as if I was a technician. There’s no service center within reasonable distance unless you think an 8 hours drive is reasonable. Its location on this page may change next time you visit.
This means that your child’s inseam needs to be AT LEAST as tall as the standover height. Ideally, there will be a little more space than that for your child to maneuver the bike comfortably. Not all bike manufacturers list the standover height for their bikes. If they do, however, you should compare it to your child’s inseam.
It’s tougher when your kiddo is at the the upper end of the recommended height/inseam for a bike. If your child is tiny or super tall, they may need a smaller OR bigger bike than the general range we suggest here. Don’t let that stress you out–this is just a starting point, so get a basic idea of what size wheels your kid PROBABLY needs. When purchasing in store, you typically have the option to pay a little extra for a pre-assembled bike.
To measure your child’s inseam, have them stand against with their back against a wall, legs together, and place a book between their legs. Have them hold it as close to their crotch as possible. Then, using a pencil, mark where the top of the book hits the wall.
By the time a child is on a 20” bike, they are waaaaay past the point where there should be coaster brakes on their bike. Reality is, coaster brakes are far cheaper than hand brakes and are pretty typical of any kid’s bike under $200. Featuring a BMX-styled frame, this Dynacraft Throttle BMX bike is sure to be a hit with any young bike rider. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, you’ll be able to find a Dynacraft BMX bike that suits your needs. Their bikes are known for being durable, comfortable, and easy to ride. The bikes come with either coaster brakes or hand brakes.
