Rotomolded coolers like YETI’s Tundra above are made out of a single piece of continuous plastic, which is great for durability but means they typically lack built-in features and mounting locations. Tack on a price that undercuts the similarly sized Tundra 65 above by a considerable $135, and the Xspec stands out as a very well-rounded design at a great value. This soft cooler bag has a very good ice igloo ice chest life for a semi-affordable soft top. Also, there is plenty of storage and helpful features such as the top-access lid and padded shoulder strap. Our only minor complaint lies with the somewhat weak zippers and sometimes questionable stitching near the shoulder area. Most cooler manufacturers provide a “claimed ice retention” spec in their product listings (YETI is one major brand who does not).
And the features that are in place make this a very portable and reliable product. The Igloo BMX is Igloo’s latest attempt to compete in the premium cooler market. The overall performance and ice retention numbers are good.
A lot goes into building a cooler, and we’re committed every step of the way. Comparison shopping aside, the Igloo MaxCold represents some truly exceptional value at its sub-$50 price tag. It isn’t much to look at, but it’s a powerful performer that’ll keep your drinks cold longer than other cheap coolers, and longer than some coolers that cost a lot more, too.
We’ve got lots of easily haulable, rugged coolers for that. Yes, yes, yes and yes — we design dependable coolers for it all. And we do it so you can have a more enjoyable experience with fresh, cold snacks and beverages just a cooler away at all times. That’s about as fantastic of a result as I could have hoped for from the MaxCold, and easily the best cooler performance I was able to find for under $100. The next step up would be the Lifetime High Performance Cooler, which I found on sale at Walmart for $97. It finished my performance tests in a virtual tie with the MaxCold, and it offers a bigger, better design that features a pair of heavy-duty lid latches and roped handles, plus a built-in bottle opener.
As you search for the right cooler to choose, the many options available can make it intimidating to ensure you find the right one. Really, it all comes down to which cooler best suits your needs and works for the activity you have planned. Many injection-molded designs also allow for various mounting locations for accessories like tables, cup holders, and cutting boards—something you don’t typically get with rotomolding. By measuring meltwater, we can produce data that illustrates the relative performance of insulation between coolers over time. For example, after five days, the Coleman Xtreme retained 11 more pounds of ice than the Igloo MaxCold did. That translates to the Coleman Xtreme being 20% more efficient than the Igloo MaxCold overall in ice retention during the same time period. We also started tracking the internal temperature of the coolers with the ThermoWorks Signals thermometer to see exactly when temperatures began to rise. We’ve tested Polar Bear coolers for seven years now, buying them or receiving test units from Polar Bear.
And, to the MaxCold’s credit, it’s both comfortable to carry and sturdy enough to sit on, which makes it a pretty good pick for a camping trip. They make coolers for every style and price range and we know you will find them to be the best choice. There are many factors that can affect this like the temperature outside or how much ice is in the cooler. If you cool the cooler before you add the ice also makes a huge difference. We have some coolers that my wife and kids cannot or do not lift even empty.
