Neither tent experienced any ground leaks during testing, either under rainy conditions or when we soaked the tents and the ground underneath them with a garden hose. Without the fly, the Mineral King 3 has a full mesh dome with a waterproof, tape-seamed bathtub-style polyester floor. The tent doors are nearly wall-sized, and when they’re unzipped, you simply stuff them into pockets, rather than having to roll and toggle-tie the fabric. Two hanging pockets plus loops for a ceiling hammock provide simple yet effective additional interior gear storage. Despite having the smallest capacity of the tents we tested at 42.5 square feet, the Mineral King 3 easily fits two people with a full-size mattress, or two sleeping pads, and gear. Two large vestibules add nearly 40 square feet combined—that is, 18.75 square feet on either side—of potentially protected ground space.
If keeping cool when camping is important to you, it might be worth going for the larger size. Airflow is ensured by the upper vents and walls, which retain a cool temperature internally. More vents coleman sleeping bags at the bottom would have been beneficial, since the tent may get stuffy if there are more than two campers. Sometimes you really need to keep your personal belongings safe while you sleep.
Other dissatisfied customers struggled to take it down as easily as they set it up. Seasons-wise & climate-wise, in view of so much mesh around, this tent is best suited for warm weather camping or maximum for two seasons (late spring, summer, and early autumn). Though the windows and the inner door are indeed with panels so you can close them all to preserve warmth if it is chilly outside. But note that there is a mesh section close to the inner door. This is added to drain the rainwater and this is of importance for the tent without the porch. The picture below shows how deep the screen room is under the porch, and it is fully protected from the rain.
So this is a partial-coverage type and this allows for the large windows on the three sides. The picture below shows the other version that is without the porch but it has an awning supported by a separate pole, and two long windshields on the sides. As you see, there is the word Cabin in the name, this is a part of its official name and this is why I am using it in the title. But this tent is everything but cabin type, and it is hard to understand why they decided to describe it that way. In fact, this is a great example of a tunnel-type tent and you can realize this from the picture below that shows the tent without the fly. Lastly, all Weathertec tents share seamless welded corners in the floor of the shelter as well as zippers protected with a cuff of water-resistant fabric to minimize seepage.
But under windy conditions, you’ll want to reinforce the poles with all available mechanisms and not cut any corners in setup. The Mineral King 3’s fly attaches intuitively with plastic buckles and has well-placed guy tabs for you to secure it with extra lines and stakes. The fly also adds the vestibule space, which not only gives you options for gear storage but also helps ventilate the tent in inclement weather via two vents.
