When we used this for toasting, the crumbs fell onto the removable crumb tray, which was easy to remove and clean. When we cooked chicken, the grease spattered inside the oven, and cleaning needed to be a bit more thorough. It wasn’t the worst cleaning we’ve had to do in the kitchen, but it’s one of the reasons we’re not likely to use this oven for greasy or splattery foods. We look for a crumb tray that slides out smoothly and that is easily accessible. For toaster ovens, most have a non-stick interior for easier cleaning. The last thing you’d want is a toaster oven that’s incredibly complicated to use.
Two of the five devices tested had timers up to 60 minutes, while the other three offered a maximum cook time of 30 minutes. We found that very few recipes require more black decker toasters than 30 minutes of continuous cooking without needing a visual check, rotation or shaking. The heavy-duty build quality is clearly shown in the basket and tray.
The more we cooked, the clearer it became which product could hold up to daily use and earn a permanent spot on the countertops and hearts of consumers. The five devices we tested were all roughly the same capacity, easily feeding two people. We found that Le Coucou’s build quality, food quality and electronics were subpar compared to the rest of the group.
While the toasting in this oven wasn’t perfect, it was better than we expected, perhaps because of the help of the convection fan. The bottom dial has icons for several toast levels as well as black decker air fryer time up to 30 minutes with a single “ding! We usually chose that option and checked the doneness of the food as it cooked, sometimes setting another timer to warn us when to peek at the food.
The GW22731 is also available in a 7-quart size, but we felt the 5.8-quart was large enough, as its wider and deeper basket could accommodate a whole chicken. It’s also quite tall and wide — 13.5 inches in height and 12.5 inches in width — so this GoWise model would need to live on your kitchen counter. The Black+Decker was the best-performing cooking platforms we tested. The Purify model provided incredibly even cooking across every recipe we threw in it.
