Beats Solo Pro Noise Cancelling Headphones NEW

The left ear cup houses a new button for toggling between noise cancelling, transparency, and extended power mode. Transparency allows ambient noise in, so you can stay aware of your surroundings. Just like a Thanksgiving turkey, these headphones are stuffed. A speech-detecting accelerometer works in tandem with the beam-forming microphones to detect when you’re speaking. Ideally, these technologies work to transmit just your voice and reduce background noise by combating sound caused by the movement of your head. Unfortunately, the microphone performance falls a little bit short of our expectations.

The trade-off is comfort though, and after about 30 minutes of wearing the Solo Pro, I’m ready for a break. The headphones have Apple’s H1 chip, the replacement for its original W1 chip. Like the W1, it allows for quick pairing with iOS devices, and among other things, “Hey Siri” support for hands-free Siri communication. It also supports newer Bluetooth technology and provides lower latency as a result. If you’re connecting to an iOS device, turning the headphones on will trigger an on-screen prompt—press a button and you’re paired. And turning the headphones on or off is as simple as folding the headband hinge in or out.

The Beats Solo Pro Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones meet both of those requirements, and starting Nov.22 at 7 p.m., they’re on sale at Walmart for Black Friday. ANC is a power-hungry technology, though; so you will see a major decrease in battery life from the old to the new Beats on-ears. The Beats Solo3 Wireless boasts just over 45 hours of playtime on a single charge, which is more than double what the Beats Solo Pro provides with noise cancellation on. After about the 24-hour mark, battery life longevity becomes overkill and a way for companies to flex on spec sheets, but it’s impressive nonetheless.

To switch listening modes on your iPhone, go to Control Center and tap and hold the headphones volume control. Press the mode button once to switch between Noise Cancelling and Transparency. Press twice to turn both modes off for maximum battery life. When you’re done hearing what you need to, just hit the button again to crank noise canceling back up.

The clamping force of the headset is so great, however, that a secure fit is easy to come by. That’s impressive for a pair of on-ear headphones, whose passive noise isolation you might expect to be inferior to that of over-ear models. In fact, my only gripe regarding the headphone’s noise cancelling is that the microphones sometimes pick up and amplify wind turbulence. That’s not a problem specific to the Solo Pro – we’ve seen it on other ANC headphones as well – but it can be quickly remedied by switching off ANC and transparency.
