It is still a very portable drone, but paired with two extra batteries and a controller, it becomes a little hard to carry for hours on end. Speaking of that camera, it is a 4K shooter at 100Mbps data rate. In front of that sensor is a f/2.8 24mm lens with an effective 83-degree field of view. Video is captured in MP4 (H.264) format, while photos are JPG with the option to also capture DNG raw images. That’s a 2X lossless zoom when shooting in 1080p, with at least a 2X lossy zoom in all shooting modes.
Note that when you connect the mobile device with the aircraft for the first time, you need to press the indicator button once to confirm connection. Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the mobile device, launch the DJI Fly app, and there will be a prompt to connect to the aircraft. OcuSync 2.0 supports both 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency bands. Similarly to what I said about photos, the smaller sensor really shows its limitations at higher ISO numbers, but I wouldn’t let that discourage you. The blacks and shadows hold up very well and the overall image still looks rich.
Once the drone is in the air, it is stable in flight in robust wind conditions . It performs extremely well, in all three flight modes. It’s hard to over-emphasize the improvement to the Mini 2 package made by the change in the controller. The original Mini sported a plastic, fold-out model that had a video game look and feel, but new the Mini 2 design has proper heft and is stronger in build.
There’s also not much point in taking out the battery from the drone if it’s the last one, since you can charge it inside the drone and use the same battery for the next flight. So I think I’ll end up using the charger with only 2 batteries. Unless I get 1 extra battery, to have 4, which brings me to the next point… This model comes in an even lighter body compared to its original version, a model designed to be used in all situations. This new DJI drone weighs less than 249 gr and is the perfect size to fit in the palm of your hand.
