The Beats Flex Wireless and the Sony WI-C310 Wireless are similarly performing headphones, and depending on your usage, you may prefer one pair over the other. The Beats are more comfortable, better-built, and have a more stable fit. They also have a W1 chip so that you can seamlessly pair them with Apple devices. However, the Sony have a better-balanced sound profile, which some users may prefer, and longer continuous battery life.
Well, you have to pair it first before you start listening to your music. You can stream audio such as songs, podcasts, or movies with Beats Flex and another set of Beats or Apple headphones. These are wireless Bluetooth earphones, yet I haven’t explained its Bluetooth till now. People around you cannot hear any sound even if you are listening at a high volume. There is a good amount of focus in the mids around 1000 Hz.
Once you’ve paired the Flex with an iPhone or iPad it will automatically show up as a paired device on any other Apple device that’s logged in with the same Apple ID account. You can also use theAudio Sharing option to stream your music to a friend who has a compatible set of AirPods or Beats headphones. The earbuds are extremely light, weighing just 18.6g, so you’ll barely notice them when you’re out and about. As you’d expect for earphones from an Apple-owned brand, the Beats Flex support the AAC codec but not apt-X.
There’s no doubt that these earphones are “best” with EDM. Give them Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash though and they make a perfectly acceptable job, but that bass boost is missing making the sound a tiny bit more hollow. Throw some First Light by Lindsay Stirling at it and they’re fine and rich.
Of course, these are $50 earbuds, so it’s no surprise there’s not an adjustable equalizer. Beats hasn’t done that in the past, and the Flex would be a weird place to start. As is typical with Beats headphones, there’s no companion app on iOS with the Flex. Instead, the company includes everything right inside the Settings menu on iPhone and iPad. That means all you’ll have to do is turn on the Flex near your iOS device and a pairing pop-up will automatically be displayed. That message will also tell you the current battery level for the earbuds and allows you to connect to that phone or tablet quickly when you need to do so in the future.
In some loud situations, like when someone is mowing the lawn or when you’re on a plane, the outside noise bleed may make it difficult to hear some types of audio, like podcasts. If you’re not worried about getting the most advanced music experience, the audio quality for podcasts, FaceTime or Zoom calls, audiobooks, and other talking related activities is perfect. Whether you’re listening to DaBaby or Tom Petty, everything sounds clear. If you just need something inexpensive that plays music, Beats Flex fills the role. Sound quality is where Beats Flex loses a lot of points, in my book.
Surprisingly, there’s no noticeable audio delay in videos whatsoever. Sure, there’s probably a couple of milliseconds of delay, but it’s hardly perceptible by a human eye. Also, the wire rubbing against your shirt doesn’t produce much cable noise during calls, which is excellent. That means you don’t get an inferior user experience if you aren’t in the Apple ecosystem, like with the AirPods headphones.
When the meeting is over, all I have to do is tap the play button on my iPhone and the Beats Flex will reconnect to the iPhone so I can continue to listen to music. The most convenient feature of Beats Flex is the magnetic buds that clip together so the earbuds hang beats solo pro wireless around your neck like a lanyard. It’s actually my favorite way to keep my earphones nearby when I’m not wearing them. I don’t have to take them out of my bag or stick them in my pocket. They’re just dangling there, waiting for me to use whenever I want them.
They don’t isolate you from outside noise all that well compared with some competitors, however. Now, if you’re using the Beats Flex with an iOS device, you’ll get prompts to sync them to your Apple ID and iCloud – which, in total, beats studio3 takes under a minute. This works on the Android side as well, though on Android, I’ve noticed it’s possible to hit in your music app and audio will continue playing through the earbuds when they’re hanging on your chest.
