I’m a Roomba skeptic — I returned one more than a decade ago after it bumped into a leg of a side table, sending a wine glass to its splintery demise — so the robots were a tough sell for me. It took the Roomba J7+ several runs to create a map of my home. For reasons that are still unknown, it kept skipping my master bedroom; only after I picked up the robot and started it up in there did it add the bedroom to its map. My corgi, Max, who has a reputation for ruining clothing, bedding and car interiors with his incessant shedding, was no doubt the culprit. To live with him, I vacuum the house often and occasionally get help from a professional cleaner. So the sight of so much dog fur even after all those efforts was truly horrifying.
It does this because it’s equipped with caterpillar tank tracks instead of tiny wheels. In a simple case of physics, the tank tracks bring edges of rugs towards and under the bot so it can simply ride over them. Other bots ram straight in with total disregard, and before you know it, they’ve either wrapped themselves in Persian rug or left an ugly mess of ruffled rug behind them.
The Dyson 360 Eye is the best performing robot vacuum available. It’s simply better at cleaning than all the others, but it also has its downsides. It can’t get under as many things as a Roomba, it still bumps into dyson robot vacuum thin things and it still can’t clean everything, meaning it’s not the only vacuum you need to own. Scheduling is as easy as tapping every day, or picking a time and day of the week and setting it to repeat, or not.

The bag can hold 30 robot bins, so you won’t need to replace it for weeks on end. There’s no reason why this concept wouldn’t work so long as it was designed correctly. It would expand the robot vacuum market as well, providing a solution to those with more than one level in their home.
Thankfully the keenly-priced and rather handsome looking iRobot i3+ gets around this huge hassle by including a larger bin – called a CleanBase – that’s attached to the charging dock. When the i3 detects that its 500-millilitre bin is full, it trundles shark cordless back to the dock where all detritus from its smaller bin is evacuated into the larger bin . This means you only need to get off your arse every few weeks to fit a new dust bag. For pet owners, it’s a truly groundbreaking advance in robot vac tech.
Its dust pickup on hard floors such as laminate is also capable. However, compared to a standard stick, upright, and cylinder vacuums, the robot vacuum’s performance was not as strong, though this is to be expected. You can get robot vacuums with even lower suction power, around 1000Pa, but you’d be sacrificing the quality of clean for a short term saving. On the top of the unit you’ll find the familiar dome housing a 360-degree camera. The robot uses this for navigation, as opposed to LiDAR, used by much of the competition. Setting the X8 up is also wonderfully easy, there’s a rather good app that allows you to do all of the usual room mapping stuff and more besides.
Its tank-like tracks make it better able to traverse different kinds of floors, Dyson promises, while the full-width brush eliminates the need for side brushes. You get the luxury of arranging cleans on various days at various times month to month. In 2001, the company released an earlier robotic vacuum cleaner, the bulky DC06, which bogged down under weight issues, heavy expectations, a hefty $6,000 price tag and which was, eventually, pulled from the market. In terms of performance then the 360 S7 Pro is a great all-rounder. The on-board technology is really impressive, with the LiDAR proving extremely accurate.
