After the success of the Pugsley, several other companies joined the market, leading to the fatbike popularity we see today. Paul de Vivie is credited for designing the first bike with a functional rear derailleur. His invention required the chain to be moved by hand between two chain wheels, giving him four gears. He combined his invention with the proteon gear from the English Whippet, which used a split chain wheel. This allowed the chain two halves of the chain wheel to open when pedaling backwards.
Various takeover made Schwinn one on the big players, and retailing through mass merchants allowed the Chicago-based company to achieve big sales. In 1928, the in-house brand for motorcycles that had been acquired in 1912 and 1917, Excelsior-Henderson, even ranked 3rd in the national motorcycle industry. By the mid-1970s, competition from lightweight and feature-rich imported bikes was making strong inroads in the budget-priced and beginners’ market. While Schwinn’s popular lines were far more durable than the budget bikes, they were also far heavier and more expensive, and parents were realizing that most of the budget bikes would outlast most kids’ interest in bicycling. As a result, Schwinns became increasingly dated in both styling and technology.

The company was founded in Chicago in 1895 by a pair of German immigrants, Ignaz Schwinn and Adolph Arnold, amidst the nation’s halcyon days of bike riding and manufacturing. Ignaz Schwinn, with his partner Adolph Arnold, incorporated “Arnold, Schwinn & Company” on October 22, 1895.
The museum is the successor to the Schwinn Bicycle Museum, which took shape after the family company declared bankruptcy in 1992. But the Schwinn bicycle of today is no longer the Schwinn of the 1950s and ‘60s. Jay Pridmore and junior author Jim Hurd have done just that in their book, Schwinn Bicycles, a 1996 publication of Motorbooks International, republished in paperback in 2001. While none of Schwinn’s bikes have bougie built-in tablets, every model costs less than $1,000 — and some are made for streaming fitness with Bluetooth speakers and app connectivity .

I am a 70 year old diabetic who bought a Schwinn 230 Recumbent bicycle in April of 2018. Schwinn sent a new one, which never worked either … so I gave up on that since the machine seemed to be exactly what I wanted.
