Ysabl is a graduate of BA Communication Arts with area of specialization in Advertising and Public Relations. She recently studied in Slim’s Fashion and Arts School during which she was able to intern for international fashion designer Tex Saverio for Fashion Exchange International. Her inclination to “do something” has been building up since childhood years as she, little by little, subconsciously adopted values from her father who is an environmental activist. Ysabl aspires to one day create her own sustainable and entirely local brand, hoping to create positive change in the cultural, economic, environmental, and social aspects of the Philippine fashion industry.
Transparency is crucial for connecting the dots of the problems in the fashion industry and understanding how to fix them. When the Rana Plaza building collapsed eight years ago, killing and injuring thousands of garment workers, rescuers had to dig through the rubble looking for clothing labels in order to figure out which brands were producing clothes there. It is impossible for companies to make sure human rights are safeguarded, working conditions are safe and the environment is protected without knowing where their products are being made.
Each sector is devoted to the goal of satisfying consumer demand for apparel under conditions that enable participants in the industry to operate at a profit. By 1800, all Western Europeans were dressing alike ; local variation became first a sign of provincial culture and later a badge of the conservative peasant. The Cloth was used as a form of currency in trade with the Portuguese and Dutch as early as the 16th Century.
Transparency underpins sustainability – without transparency, achieving a sustainable, accountable and fair fashion industry will be almost impossible. We understand that citizens are seeking rankings of the ethics and sustainability of major fashion brands. Please read this letter published in April 2021 and signed by 33 NGOs, including Fashion Revolution, calling for full supply chain transparency in the clothing sector. Ultimately, the aim of the Index is not just transparency in and of itself. However, without transparency, achieving a sustainable, accountable, and fair fashion industry will be impossible. Following the industry schedule where several seasons are designed simultaneously, students are educated in all aspects of the design process for an easy transition into professional careers in the fashion industry.
Companies such as MUD Jeans, which is based in the Netherlands employ a leasing scheme for jeans. This Dutch company “represents a new consuming philosophy that is about using instead of owning,” according to MUD’s website. Consumers pay €7.50 a month for a pair of jeans; after a year, they can return the jeans to Mud, trade them for a new pair and start another year-long lease, or keep them.
Negative factor surveys and interviews present is that the answers can be biased, due to wording in the survey or on face-to-face interactions. Focus groups, about 8 to 12 people, can be beneficial because several points can be addressed in depth. With such a small sample size, it is hard to know if the greater public would react the same way as the focus group.

Some feminists have argued that by participating in feminine fashions women are contributing to maintaining the gender differences which are part of women’s oppression. Brownmiller felt that women should reject traditionally feminine dress, focusing on comfort and practicality rather than fashion. Others believe that it is the fashion system itself that is repressive in requiring women to seasonally change their clothes to keep up with trends. However, Mosmann has pointed out that the relationship between protesting fashion and creating fashion is dynamic because the language and style used in these protests has then become part of fashion itself.
