Made for marine-related work, the Gulfmaster has hands only limited digital displays alongside its main hands for the time and subdials for other information like tide and moon data. It also includes sensors and a unique feature that allows you to move the watch hands out of the way of other information temporarily. For a $300 watch, the light should be an even, pleasant glow. Many $10 watches have much better “light up” appearances than these upper end Casios. I have an older atomic solar G Shock with a positive display and this one syncs with the atomic clock better–it has done so every night since I bought it. I agree with the other positive comments about great functionality and comfort–love the bracelet. I’d like to say more about the negative display since it gets so many negative comments. It is true that one often has to find an optimum angle to view it in various lighting conditions.

The G-Shock is a line of watches manufactured by the Japanese electronics company Casio, designed to resist mechanical stress, shock and vibration. The watches in the G-Shock line are designed primarily for sports, military and outdoors-oriented activities; nearly all G-Shocks are chronographs, with either a digital display or a combination of analogue and digital. Other features such as countdown timer, world clock, alarms, electroluminescent backlight and water resistance are included in most models. Newer high-end models in the line also feature GPS, compass or radio-controlled adjustment known as Multi-Band.

FYI, I had a new, spare, $8, generic, black velcro band that I’d planned to use on my old watch, so I tried it on this watch & it works great. It looks decent & you’d have to know that the watch originally came with a different band to pick up on it’s being a replacement. Still, for me, the alarm killed my enthusiasm for the watch.

The GW-9400 Rangeman and GWN-1000 Gulfmaster models have a Triple Sensor with a digital compass, thermometer, and barometer/altimeter. The MTG-S1000, GW-A1000, and GPW-1000 feature Triple G Resist which includes resistance to shock, centrifugal gravity, and vibration. In 2014, Casio introduced the GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor feature in the GPW-1000 Gravitymaster that allows the watch to synchronize the time through GPS signals and also adjusts the time zone automatically. The color of black and grey is more accurately described as a dark grey and light grey.

And the positive display is static whereas the negative one shines differently depending on the angle and light source. True, this may not be the watch to wear to a candlight dinner, but if you had your heart set on it you can always turn on the auto-light function. It uses LED illumination on the other analog-digital models and uses luminous paint on the all-analog models. The LED lighted models don’t have a light diffuser and the LEds tend to have a blinding effect, especially on models with the Super Illuminator feature. At a brainstorming meeting in the early 1980’s, the team at Casio was presented a proposal to create a watch that wouldn’t g shock watch break even if it fell onto a hard surface. The simple idea seemed far-fetched at the time, however, a three-man team led by Kikuo Ibe embarked on the seemingly impossible challenge. Prior to spearheading his ambitious endeavor, Ibe was the engineer-in-charge of external design for Casio watches. The team’s early attempts at creating an unbreakable watch were futile.

Its GPS navigation provides you with necessary data in real-time while en route to your destination. The Casio G-Shock Rangeman also features a digital compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer and plenty of other state-of-the-art technology. Air needed to surround the heart of the watch inside the rubber case with minimal touch points. These few touch points had to be cushioned by shock absorbent gel materials. Soon after this revelation, Ibe’s work continued and the first G- Shock DW-5000C was officially launched by Casio in 1983.
